Therefore, who else would experience the karma done and accumulated by the moon itself? Monks, the karma done and accumulated does not mature in the external realm of earth, nor does it mature in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous karma done and accumulated matures only in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The karmas of sentient beings, even after hundreds of eons, will not be lost. When they are gathered and the time has come, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Guide of beings to be tamed, the unsurpassed, the Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. He resided in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana near Vārāṇasī. Then, after some time, a Brahmin woman went forth into the teachings of the Bhagavan Light Protector. She received instructions from him, studied and recited, and became skilled in the aggregates, skilled in the elements, skilled in the sense bases, skilled in dependent origination, and skilled in what is and is not possible. However, she was unable to generate ultimate wisdom. The female preceptor from whom she went forth was declared by the Bhagavan Light Protector to be the foremost of those who uphold the scriptures. Then, that nun, at the time of her death, made a prayer: Just as my female preceptor was declared to be the foremost of those who uphold the scriptures, so too, in the future, may I go forth into the teachings of the Bhagavan, of whom the Bhagavan Light Protector prophesied to the Brahmin youth, 'O Brahmin youth, when you live to be a hundred years old, you will become the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni,' and may I be declared by the Bhagavan Shakyamuni to be the foremost of those who uphold the scriptures. The Bhagavan said: Monks,

Thus he thought. At that time, the one who had been a Brahmin's daughter was this Bhikshuni Moon, and because she had made a vow, she was shown to be the best of those who hold the hearing. She received the prophecy there, and having learned and recited it, she has now realized the state of an Arhat. Monks, thus, those who are definitely black in karma will definitely have a ripening that is also black. Those who are definitely white in karma will definitely have a ripening that is also white. Those who are mixed in karma will also have a ripening that is mixed. Monks, therefore, one should abandon those who are definitely black in karma and those who are mixed, and one should only devote oneself to those who are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. As for the one called Utpala, the kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas all honored, respected, revered, esteemed, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by the gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit, and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies, resided and dwelt with the Sangha of Shravakas in the Kalanda Grove of Light in Rajagriha. At that time, in the city of Rajagriha, there was a festival called the meeting of the Dragon King Mountain Peak and Delightful, and many people from all six great cities gathered there. Then, after a while, a teacher of actors came from the south, and his daughter, named Utpala, was beautiful in form, pleasing to look at, and lovely, with limbs
