He had mastered the three Vedas to their ultimate conclusion, capable of understanding the categories of names, clear knowledge, and the detailed distinctions of letters, and the fifth—all that included stories—from each and every word. Then, he became the teacher of five hundred Brahmin children who recited Brahmin mantras. Then, because he needed a son, he took a wife from the same caste. He and she played together, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure. As he played, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure, his wife became pregnant. When she was eight or nine months pregnant, she gave birth to a daughter who was beautiful in form, pleasing to behold, lovely, and possessed all limbs and minor limbs. Most of the wise and those considered wise went there to see the Bhagavan. Then, those people disappeared and said to their family members, 'Why don't those who know the treatises come? What is the reason for this?' They said, 'The Bhagavan, the all-knowing Shakyamuni, has come here, and they have all become inclined towards him.' Then, having heard the sound 'Buddha,' which had never occurred before, all his hairs stood on end. Then, the daughter Moon, having heard the sound 'Buddha,' went to the Bhagavan. Then, she saw the Buddha Bhagavan's body well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a mountain of jewels, good in every way. As soon as she saw him, she prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat before the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan, having understood the thoughts, predispositions, faculties, and nature of the daughter Moon, taught her the Dharma in such a way that she would realize the four noble truths. Having heard that, the daughter Moon, with the wisdom vajra, shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates, and directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, she went forth in the presence of the great mother of beings. Then, through diligence, practice, and effort, she realized that this wheel of samsara with the five eyes is wavering and unstable. She ascertained that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, fall, disintegration, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, she directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from desire for the three realms, regards gold and charcoal as equal, and the sky and the palm of the hand as the same.

Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, you should recite and expound the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month. At that time, the Great Mother of Beings requested: Please, Blessed One, grant the transmission of the Pratimoksha Sutra; please, Sugata, grant the transmission of the Pratimoksha Sutra. The Blessed One said: The Tathagata, the perfectly complete Buddha, does not transmit the Dharma transmission to the bhikkhunis word by word. If there is anyone among you who can remember after hearing it once, then I will transmit it. Then, at that time, the bhikkhuni Moon gathered in that very sangha and resided. Then, the bhikkhuni Moon rose from her seat, folded her palms respectfully towards the direction where the Blessed One was, and said this to the Blessed One: If I can grasp it by saying it once, please, Blessed One, grant the transmission of the Pratimoksha Sutra; please, Sugata, grant the transmission of the Pratimoksha Sutra. Then, the Blessed One extensively transmitted the transmission, and the bhikkhuni Moon remembered it after hearing it once. At that time, the Blessed One said to the monks: Among my sravaka bhikkhunis, the foremost in extensive learning and upholding the precepts is this bhikkhuni Moon. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable One, what deeds did the bhikkhuni Moon do and accumulate that she was born into a wealthy family, with a beautiful appearance, pleasing to look at, beautiful and charming, and able to remember the Dharma she heard? The Blessed One said: Monks, Moon herself accumulated merit in other past lives, possessed the complete causes and conditions, and like crossing a dangerous ford, she did and accumulated those virtuous deeds that would not be devoured by obstacles.
