Just as a sick person is liberated from all diseases, by means of the wealth that came to the Blessed One, it returned to its own place. The monks, not sleeping at night and dawn, abide in diligent practice. They saw a great light appearing before the Blessed One. Having seen it, they also arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the reason? Is it the ruler of the Saha world, Brahma, or the ruler of the gods, Indra, or the Four Great Kings who have come to behold the Blessed One?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, it is not the ruler of the Saha world, Brahma, nor the ruler of the gods, Indra, nor the Four Great Kings who have come to behold me. But the queen of King Rupakaya (gzugs can snying po), named Shri Devi (dpal ldan ma), at the cost of her own life, remembered the virtues of the Buddha, and lit a garland of butter lamps on the stupa of the Tathagata's hair and nails, and was killed by King Ajatashatru (ma skyes dgra) in anger. She died with a joyful mind towards me, and was reborn in the good heavenly realm of the Thirty-Three Heavens. Tonight she came to me, and I taught her the Dharma, and she realized the truth, and then returned to her own abode. Therefore, monks, you should learn in this way: to respect the teacher, to respect the lama, to respect the rituals, to make offerings. Having respected the teacher, respected the lama, respected the rituals, and made offerings, abide in reliance, monks, you should learn in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised the words of the Blessed One. Garments, that is, kings, great ministers, rich people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, etc., respect, honor, revere, and make offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One, as well as gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, and garudas.

I, along with non-humans and pot-bellied beings, worship and know the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who possesses great merit, and who has obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medical treatment, and medicines. Together with the community of Shravakas, he resides in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the pleasure garden of Anathapindada. Then, when Anathapindada offered the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha, he eventually offered a hundred million kotis of gold coins to the teachings of the Bhagavan. At that time, he thought: What is so amazing about others giving and doing good deeds? In order to benefit the poor people, let the people living in Shravasti gather faith and serve the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Shravakas. By doing so, I will also be able to benefit many people and accumulate a lot of merit. Then, Anathapindada told the king what he had thought. The king also proclaimed throughout Shravasti: O people of the royal palace residing in Shravasti, listen! From today, in seven days, Anathapindada, for the sake of the Tathagata's Shravaka disciples, will ride an elephant and wants to collect faith. Whatever you should give, give it. Then, after some time, when the seven days were over, Anathapindada rode an elephant and began to collect faith for the Tathagata's Shravaka disciples. There, those who had as much as they had, gave as much as they could. Some gave necklaces, some gave bracelets, some gave armlets, some gave gold necklaces, some gave finger rings, some gave pearl necklaces, some gave gold, some gave silver, and some even gave an eighth of a measure of barley.

does so. That householder also accepts (the offerings) in order to benefit others. Then, once, a very poor woman, with great difficulty, obtained a piece of cloth after three months. She put on that cloth and walked into the street. She saw the householder Anathapindika blowing a conch shell and beating a round drum, coming from afar, and asked a layperson: 'This householder is wealthy, has much wealth, enjoys great abundance, and can even see the treasures buried underground. Why does he go around begging from house to house?' That layperson said: 'It is for the benefit of others, for the sake of those who cannot afford to offer food to the Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers, that he does this, so that he can gather as much wealth as possible and offer it to the Blessed One.' Then, that girl thought: 'Ah, I am truly without merit! I alone do not have the power to offer food to the Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers. I must help him (the householder) a little bit.' Then she looked to see what she had, and saw nothing but the piece of cloth she was wearing. She thought: 'If I
