Is it Ishvara? Or did the Four Great Kings come to behold the Blessed One? The Blessed One said: Monks, it is not Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, or Ishvara, nor did the Four Great Kings come to behold me. Monks, did you see the five hundred swans that King Pasenadi of Kosala released here? Venerable one, we saw them. He said: They were delighted with me, and after dying, they were born in the good heavenly realm of the Thirty-three. Last night they came to me, and I taught them the Dharma, and they realized the truth and returned to their own abode. Then, the monks were in doubt and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable one, what deeds did the sons of the gods, who were formerly swans, do to be born as swans? And what deeds did they do to be born in the heavens and see the truth? The Blessed One said: Monks, it is precisely because they themselves had previously accumulated merits and possessed the necessary conditions in other lifetimes, and had done and accumulated those deeds that come like a flood and cannot be avoided. Therefore, how could the deeds done and accumulated by the sons of the gods who were formerly swans be experienced by anyone else? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realms of water, fire, and wind. The deeds done and accumulated, both virtuous and non-virtuous, will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings will not be lost even for hundreds of eons. When the collection [of causes] is complete and the time has come, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in the bygone era, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed, Tamer of Beings, the Unequaled, Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Krakucchanda (藏文:འོད་སྲུང་), appeared in the world. He lived in the city of

In Varanasi, the teacher dwelt in the Deer Park where sages speak. At that time, those who, having gone forth, were lax in their training were born as geese. Those who made me happy were born as gods. Those who guarded the remaining trainings realized the truth. Monks, therefore, those actions that are definitely black will definitely have a black ripening. Those actions that are definitely white will definitely have a white ripening. Mixed actions will have a mixed ripening. Monks, therefore, abandon those actions that are definitely black and mixed actions, and dedicate yourselves solely to those actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The sixth chapter of the summary verses from the Hundred Deeds is complete.
