The sixth verse of the Vinaya. The sixth verse of the Vinaya. The Vinaya is: black snake and moon, sala tree and glorious goddess, clothes and parrot messenger, buffalo and fasting, swan finally spoken. What is called the black snake is that the Buddhas Kings and great ministers, rich people and palace attendants, merchants and captains, gods and nagas, yakshas and asuras, garudas and kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, all revered the Blessed One, the Buddha. They honored him as their teacher, drew his image, and made offerings to him. The gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers worshiped and knew the Blessed One, the Buddha, who possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. He resided with the monastic community of hearers in the Kalanda Grove of Light in Rajagriha. At that time, in the city of Rajagriha, there was a wealthy householder, rich in possessions and great in enjoyment, with vast holdings, possessing wealth like that of Vaishravana, even rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. But he was a miser, extremely stingy, holding onto all his possessions, not even giving alms to crows. When he saw ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, and the hungry, he felt disgust in his heart. Later, he hid great piles of gold and silver in his garden, and because of his attachment and clinging to these riches, he eventually died. After his death, he was reborn as a venomous black snake with poisonous eyes, coiled up in the place where he had buried his gold and silver. From then on, whoever entered that garden would be killed by a mere glance from the snake. Throughout the city of Rajagriha, it was rumored that whoever went into such-and-such garden would be destroyed. The people appealed to King Bimbisara. Then King Bimbisara thought, "The Buddha

Thinking, who else but the Bhagavan (bcom ldan 'das, Sanskrit: bhagavan, Romanized Sanskrit: bhagavan, literal meaning: World Honored One) could subdue it? Then, King Rupin (gzugs can snying po), with a large retinue, went to where the Bhagavan was. Having arrived, he bowed to the Bhagavan's feet with his head and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the Bhagavan taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted King Rupin with Dharma talks. Having taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted him with various Dharma talks, he remained silent. Then, King Rupin rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, addressed the Bhagavan, saying: "Bhagavan, in this Rajagriha (རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་) in a certain pleasure garden, there is a venomous snake, a great black snake with venomous eyes, which is destroying many people. Please, Bhagavan, out of compassion, subdue it." Then, the Bhagavan consented to King Rupin by remaining silent. Then, King Rupin, realizing that the Bhagavan had consented by remaining silent, bowed to the Bhagavan's feet with his head, rose from his seat, and departed. Then, after that night had passed, the Bhagavan, the next morning, put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, took his bowl, and went to that pleasure garden. Having arrived, the Bhagavan emitted golden rays of light, brighter than the light of a thousand suns, illuminating the entire pleasure garden. He also emitted rays of loving-kindness, cultivated for a thousand kalpas, and as soon as those rays touched its body, it became extremely cool. Then, the venomous snake looked around, thinking: "Whose power has made my body so cool?" Then, it saw the Buddha Bhagavan, his body adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light.

Then, he saw a sight surpassing the light of a thousand suns, like a jeweled mountain walking, all things beautiful. Immediately upon seeing this, he generated faith in the Blessed One. Having generated faith, the Blessed One taught him the Dharma in accordance with him: "Good-faced one, because you have accomplished these things, you have fallen into being a venomous snake. Now, generate faith in me and do not be attached to this treasure, and it will be well. From here, after death, you will also be born in the hells." Then, when the Blessed One remembered his past life, he wept. Then, the Blessed One spoke in verse at that time: "You have been born as an animal, Now I have nothing to do. You have already been born in a state of disadvantage, What is the use of crying in vain? Here, the Victorious One is compassionate, Generate faith in me, If you abandon the animal realm, That would be good. However, you will go to the higher realms." Then, after a while, the Blessed One put the snake into his bowl and carried it to the Grove of Light. At that time, the king and the people of Magadha heard how the Blessed One had tamed the venomous snake. Then, the venomous snake despised its own body, opened its mouth, and, with joy in its heart towards the Blessed One, died and was born in the good heaven of the Thirty-Three. Not long after the son of the gods or daughter of the gods was born, by the nature of Dharma, three thoughts arose: From where did I die and where was I born, and by what karma was I born? Then, he saw that he had died from being a venomous snake, was born in the good heaven of the Thirty-Three, and had joy in his heart towards the Blessed One. Then, the son of the gods, who had previously been a venomous snake, thought to himself: It is not my place to go to see the Blessed One only after I have matured. I will go to see the Blessed One before I have matured. Then, the son of the gods, who had previously been a venomous snake, with earrings and armlets adorned and moving, his body adorned with necklaces and bracelets, wearing a crown adorned with various jewels, his body smeared with saffron and tamala.
