Just as one is liberated from all diseases, with the wealth that came to the Blessed One, that very night, he went to the residence of King Image of Essence (Gzugs can snying po). He illuminated all the king's palaces with great light, awakened the king, and said: Great king, what is the use of sleeping so much? Then the king awoke and saw that great light and the son of the gods. Having seen them, he was both happy and content, and asked, "Who are you?" The son of the gods replied, "I am the one who, in that grove, after the Blessed One subdued the venomous serpent, died and was reborn in the beautiful heaven of the Thirty-Three (Trāyastriṃśa). I also served the Blessed One, and thus realized the truth. Now I will instruct you, go and from a certain direction in that grove, dig up a great treasure, and for my sake, offer food to the Blessed One and the community of hearers, and also request the recitation of the source of merit." Then, King Image of Essence, without saying anything to the son of the gods, agreed. Then, the son of the gods, who had previously become a venomous serpent, knowing that the king had agreed without saying anything, disappeared right there. Then, King Image of Essence, that very night, commanded the people of the court and the inhabitants of the country of Magadha to go to that grove, dig up the treasure, and for three months offer food to the Blessed One and the community of hearers. He reported to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, what deeds did the son of the gods, who had previously become a venomous serpent, do to be born as a venomous serpent? What deeds did he do to be born in the heavens and realize the truth?" The Blessed One replied, "He generated great attachment, and he generated hatred towards ascetics, Brahmins, the poor and destitute, and the miserly, therefore he was born as a venomous serpent. He made my mind happy, therefore he was born in the heavens. During the time of the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Light Protector (Krakucchanda), he became a lay follower, took refuge, and took the precepts, therefore he realized the truth. Great king, therefore strive to abandon miserliness,

So that such evils as cruel acts do not arise, and in order to transform them into such collections of virtues as those of a divine son, great king, you should teach. Then, King Rupin praised the words spoken by the Blessed One, rejoiced, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, rose from his seat, and departed. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The story of Chandra is as follows: The Blessed Buddha was honored by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, navigators, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. They revered him as their teacher, drew pictures of him, and made offerings to him. The gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas worshipped and knew that the Blessed Buddha, endowed with great merit, possessed robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and other necessities. Together with the monastic community of shravakas, he resided in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, there lived in Shravasti a Brahmin farmer who had taken a wife from his own caste, and he enjoyed playing and rejoicing with her. As they played and rejoiced, his wife became pregnant, and after eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son. The boy was handsome, pleasing to look at, beautiful, and made everyone's eyes sparkle. The Brahmin had obtained him with difficulty, and since he had no other sons or daughters, he raised him carefully and let him grow up. Because he made the whole world happy, the Brahmins and householders named the boy Chandra (Moon). Then, the Brahmin boy Chandra traveled through all the cities, and the Brahmin loved the boy even more.

became subdued. While walking, sitting, and sleeping, he always diligently guarded himself. That Brahmin's house was also near the householder Anāthapiṇḍika. Then, that Brahmin boy, having associated with Anāthapiṇḍika, went to Jetavana Grove. Having heard the Buddha's teachings, he gained faith in the Blessed One's doctrine. However, he had a short life and died, being reborn in the excellent heaven of the Thirty-three. When a son or daughter of the gods is born, it is natural that three thoughts arise: From where did I die and transmigrate, where was I born, and by what karma was I born? He died from the human realm and was born in the excellent heaven of the Thirty-three, and with joy in his heart for the Blessed One, he saw the Blessed One. Then, the son of the gods who had previously been a Brahmin thought to himself: It is not my place to go to see the Blessed One after a long time; I should go to see the Blessed One soon. Then, the son of the gods who had previously been a Brahmin, adorned with earrings and armlets that jingled and swayed, his body adorned with necklaces and garlands, wearing a crown adorned with various jewels, his body smeared with saffron, Tamala leaves, and Kala and other fragrances, that very night, filled a basket with celestial Utpala flowers, lotuses, Kumuda flowers, white lotuses, and Mandārava flowers, illuminating the entire Jetavana Grove with great light, scattering flowers upon the Blessed One, and sat before the Blessed One to hear the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One, having understood the thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature of the son of the gods who had previously been a Brahmin, taught him the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the Four Noble Truths. Having heard this, the son of the gods who had previously been a Brahmin, with the vajra of wisdom, shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates, and attained the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he spoke three times with joy: Venerable Blessed One, you have dried up my ocean of blood and tears, crossed the mountain of bones, and closed the doors of the evil realms.
