Having arrived in a certain grove, there lived in that grove a parrot that understood human speech. It saw the Blessed One from afar. Then, going very quickly, it said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, please come here. Blessed One, it is good, good that you have come! Please bless me. Please resolve to come only to this grove." Then, in order to bless that parrot, the Blessed One spread a grass mat under the tree where the parrot lived and sat in the lotus position. The great hearers sat under other trees. Then the parrot, fearing that humans or non-humans, or yakshas, or rakshasas, or deer or wild animals would harm the Blessed One and the hearers, patrolled back and forth in that grove throughout the night. Then, when dawn broke, it circumambulated the Blessed One three times and asked for forgiveness: "Blessed One, I was born in the animal realm, and I have nothing to offer the Blessed One, please forgive me. Even so, I will go ahead and inform King Image Heart (Gzugs-can snying-po), telling him that the Blessed One has arrived." The Blessed One said: "Do so." Then, after a while, it set out ahead of the Blessed One and eventually arrived at the king's place. At that time, King Image Heart was on top of the palace, playing musical instruments and enjoying himself with many women. Then, the parrot that understood human speech said to the king: "O king, you should know that the Blessed One, together with the community of hearers, has arrived in your land. O god, you should prepare a feast." Then the king descended very quickly from the top of the palace, accompanied by a retinue of great ministers, and prepared the seats for the Blessed One, and welcomed the Blessed One with umbrellas, banners, incense, perfumes, and various kinds of flowers. Then, the Blessed One, together with the community of hearers, was invited inside with great respect and enjoyed delicious food.

was satisfied. Then the parrot thought to himself, 'All these riches of the Blessed One's assembly of disciples are due to my merit.' Recognizing this, he rejoiced, was content, and delighted. He felt great joy, happiness, and peace of mind. While flying back and forth in front of the king, he was cut down and killed. Because he died with a joyful heart towards the Blessed One, he was reborn in the excellent heaven of the Thirty-Three. Soon after the son of the gods or daughter of the gods was born, three thoughts naturally arose: 'From where did I die? Where was I born? By what actions was I born?' Then he saw that he had died from the animal realm, was born in the excellent heaven of the Thirty-Three, and had developed a joyful mind towards the Blessed One. Then the son of the gods, who had previously been a parrot, thought, 'It is not my way to go to see the Blessed One only after I have grown old. I will go to see the Blessed One before I grow old.' Then the son of the gods, who had previously been a parrot, wearing earrings that were pure and moving, adorned with necklaces and garlands on his body, wearing a crown adorned with various precious jewels, his body smeared with saffron, tamala leaves, and kala and other fragrances, that very night filled a vessel with heavenly flowers of utpala, lotus, kumuda, white lotus, and mandara, illuminated the entire grove of Prince Jeta with great light, scattered flowers on the Blessed One, and sat before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma. Then the Blessed One, understanding the thoughts, predispositions, inclinations, and nature of the son of the gods who had previously been a parrot, taught him the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the Four Noble Truths. Having heard this, the son of the gods who had previously been a parrot, having shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, attained the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he spoke three times words of joy: 'Venerable Blessed One, you have dried up my ocean of blood and tears, crossed the mountain of bones, closed the doors of the lower realms, and opened the doors of heaven and libera
