Having obtained [it], not looking at the gains, attachments, and honors of the world, becoming a place where the gods and their retinues worship, remember, and respectfully praise. He then built a hut of leaves on the bank of the Ganges River and meditated. His mother, having been born in the realm of the pretas, was like a burning tree stump, naked, covering herself with her own hair. Her belly was as big as a mountain, but her mouth was as small as the eye of a needle. Burning, extremely burning, everywhere extremely burning, the flames blazed fiercely. She emitted a burning and painful sound. The one with vows went to the water's edge, and after a while, the one by the water saw the female preta and asked: Who are you, similar to this? The preta said: From where is a son born? The loving mother is me! Separated from food and drink, born among the pretas. Twenty-five years have passed since I died, I have not even seen the taste of water, let alone food? The trees laden with fruit, when I go to their base, those trees become fruitless. Even if I go to the shore of a full lake, those also become dry. It is comfortable under the tree of the monks, the water in your vessel is also cool. Have compassion on me who am hungry! Tormented by thirst, please give me water! Then, the one by the water said to the mother: Mother, when you were a human, did I not have you give alms and do good deeds? The preta said: A son, I was overcome by stinginess, I did not give alms, nor did I do good deeds. All the wealth that was obtained, I buried in a pit with a sinful mind. A son, therefore, inquire about faith, and for my sake, offer food to the sangha of monks, including the Buddha, and recite the dedication of merit. Perhaps I may be liberated from the place of birth of a preta. The one by the water said: I will do so, and you also sit in front of the chief! The preta said: A son, I am naked, I feel ashamed, I cannot face [them]. The one by the water said: Mother, when you were doing evil, you were not ashamed, why are you ashamed now when you are experiencing the result? The preta said: Well then, let it be done that way!
