The Fifth Chapter: Verses on Restraint The Fifth Chapter: Verses on Restraint. Restraint is: sugar cane fields and food, water and containers for external places, Maudgalyayana and water remnants, the blind and merchants, sons and external orifices. These categories are shown. The place of squeezing sugar cane means: The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are respected by kings and, great ministers and wealthy people and, people of the palace entourage and, merchants and, captains and, gods and, nagas and, yakshas and, asuras and, garudas and, kinnaras and, mahoragas, regarded as teachers, depicted, and offered to. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who are offered to and known by gods and, nagas and, yakshas and, asuras and, garudas and, kinnaras and, mahoragas, possess great merit, and obtain clothing and, food and, bedding and, cushions and, requisites for the sick and, medicines. Together with the assembly of shravakas, they reside in the Kalanda grove of light in Rajagriha. When the Bhagavat attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, the two venerable ones, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, made this vow: From sentient beings in hells, animals, and pretas, until not even one sentient being is liberated, we will not eat food. Then, the two venerable ones occasionally wander and go to the hells from time to time. Occasionally they wander and go among the animals. Occasionally they wander and go among the pretas. There, hearing the bad sounds of sentient beings threatened by various harms, they return from wandering and tell the four assemblies. Having heard this, they also become disgusted. Then, the two of them show it to them and teach the Dharma that corresponds to it, so many sentient beings, having heard it, gain special benefits and become places for hearing the Dharma and talking. Later, the venerable great Maudgalyayana wandered among the pretas.

Weeping, he departed. The preta's stomach was as large as a mountain, but its mouth was as small as the eye of a needle, covered by its own hair. Burning, intensely burning, everywhere intensely burning, the flames burning as one, scorching, uttering sounds of distress, experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, and seeing where excrement and urine were, circling around there, but even that was not easy to find. Then, that elder asked the preta: 'Hey, what karma did you do, that you are experiencing such intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings?' The preta said: 'When the sun rises, there is no need for a lamp. Please report this matter to the Bhagavan, and he will prophesy to you the nature of my karma.' Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where the Bhagavan was. At that time, the Bhagavan, having arisen from samadhi, was teaching the fourfold assembly everything that had the taste of dharma, like bees collecting unboiled honey. Countless retinues were also listening to everything that had the taste of dharma from the Bhagavan without moving their senses. Then, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, always speak frankly, speak sweetly, say "Come, welcome!", always smile first. There, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: 'Maudgalyāyana, come! Welcome! Where have you just come from?' Maudgalyāyana replied: 'Venerable, I have returned from wandering among the pretas, where I saw a preta with a stomach as large as a mountain, but a mouth as small as the eye of a needle, covered by its own hair, smelling extremely foul like feces, extremely ugly, eating feces as food, and even that was not easy to find.' He further reported: 'The body is huge like a high mountain, the lips and throat are dry and extremely ugly, one's own hair covers the face, naked, the mouth is thin like the eye of a needle, extremely emaciated, like that, naked, covered by hair, like erecting a wheel of bones, holding a skull, repulsive, weeping and running everywhere, exhausted by hunger and thirst, suffering.'

Oppressed by what suffering, uttering pitiful cries, experiencing the feeling of suffering. Therefore, in the human world, what terrible sins have been committed? Therefore, such suffering, terrible, is being experienced. The Blessed One said, "The son of Maudgalyayana, Ida, is the one who commits sinful deeds. Do you wish to hear the nature of his deeds?" Bhikshus, listen attentively. The son of Maudgalyayana, if so, listen well, hold it in your mind, and I will tell you. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the past, in the city of Rajagriha, there was a wealthy merchant, rich in possessions, with great enjoyment, possessing vast and extensive holdings, endowed with the wealth of Vaishravana, rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. He had five hundred places where sugarcane was pressed, and in those places, he had sugarcane pressed. When the Buddhas do not appear in the world, the Pratyekabuddhas, compassionate to the poor and destitute, living in remote places, the sole objects of offerings in the world, appear in the world. For a moment, a Pratyekabuddha, compassionate to the poor and destitute, living in a remote place, appeared. He, in the morning, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, carrying a begging bowl, went to Rajagriha for alms. Bhikshu, he was also afflicted by a disease that dried up his internal organs, and the doctor advised that sugarcane juice would be beneficial, so he went to the great merchant. The merchant also saw that the Pratyekabuddha's body was beautiful and his mind was beautiful. Having seen this, the merchant said, "What does the noble one desire?" The Pratyekabuddha said, "Householder, I desire sugarcane juice." Then, the householder instructed a gardener, "Offer sugarcane juice to the noble one." After that, the householder went out for some matter. Then, that person developed a miserly mind towards the possessions of others, thinking, "If I give him sugarcane juice, he will come here again later." Thus, he fell into the abyss of the three unpleasant realms of existence, abandoned the two realms of existence desired by all, and prolonged the path of the noble ones. He generated a sinful mind, and self-
