I said to the Buddha, "Bhikkhu, give me your alms bowl, and I will give you sugarcane juice." Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas do not allow the sight of what they do not know. Because of compassion for those who are suffering and poor, he thought to help that person, so he gave him the alms bowl. Then, that person with bad conduct and no compassion in his heart took it and went to a secluded place, filled it with urine, and covered it with sugarcane juice foam on top, and offered it to the Pratyekabuddha. When he felt it, he thought, "This defiled one must have committed a great sin." Then, he went to one side and emptied the bowl. The Blessed One said, "Son of Maudgalyāyana, what do you think? At that time, the one who became Tsalsa at that time was this hungry ghost. Because of the ripening of that karma, he experienced endless suffering in samsara, and now he has become a hungry ghost and is experiencing unbearable suffering." Son of Maudgalyāyana, therefore, in order to prevent such offenses of hungry ghosts from happening again, one should strive to abandon stinginess. Son of Maudgalyāyana, if that is the case, then the karma that is definitely black will also definitely become black in its ripening. The karmas that are definitely white will also definitely become white in their ripening. The karmas that are guiding will also become guiding in their ripening. Son of Maudgalyāyana, therefore, one should abandon the karmas that are definitely black and the guiding ones, and only focus on the karmas that are definitely white. Son of Maudgalyāyana, you should train in this way." After the Blessed One said this, the venerable great son of Maudgalyāyana, as well as the gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and others, rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. Food refers to the kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, to the Buddha, the Blessed One.

And the Ḍākinīs, and the Kiṃnaras, and the Mahoragas revered, respected as gurus, respected as images, and made offerings. The gods, and the nāgas, and the yakṣas, and the asuras, and the Ḍākinīs, and the Kiṃnaras, and the Mahoragas worshipped and knew the Blessed One, endowed with great merit, who had obtained robes, and food, and bedding, and cushions, and medicine, and medicinal supplies. Together with the Śrāvaka Saṃgha, he was dwelling in Jetavana in Śrāvastī, in the grove of Anāthapiṇḍada, the householder who gives food, in the grove of Prince Jeta. At that time, the great son, the venerable Maudgalyāyana, was sitting under a tree for the sake of the daytime dwelling. The great son, the venerable Maudgalyāyana, heard the sound of a female preta, uttering a miserable sound. Experiencing intense, unbearable, burning, and unpleasant feelings, she begged for food, saying, "Friends, I am hungry! Friends, I am thirsty!" He heard these words. Then, the venerable great son Maudgalyāyana saw that female preta and asked, "What deed have you done, that you are experiencing such suffering?" The female preta said, "A lamp is not needed when the sun has risen. Please report this matter to the Blessed One, and he will tell you the nature of my deeds." Then, the venerable great son Maudgalyāyana went to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One had arisen from samādhi and was teaching the fourfold assembly all that had the taste of dharma, like unboiled honey. Hundreds of thousands of retinues were also listening to all that had the taste of dharma from the Blessed One without moving their senses. Then, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, always smile first, then speak frankly, speak sweetly, and say, "Come, you have come well." There, the Blessed One said to the venerable great son Maudgalyāyana, "Son of Maudgalyāyana, come! You have come well! Where have you come from just now?" The son of Maudgalyāyana replied, "Venerable one, I have come from wandering among the pretas, and there I saw a female preta.

The stomach is as big as a mountain, but the mouth is as small as the eye of a needle. One's own hair covers the body, being naked and emitting a pitiful sound, experiencing intense suffering, unbearable pain, heat, and unpleasant feelings. I saw such a sight. Again, it was reported: The great body is like a high mountain, the lips and throat are dry and extremely ugly. One's own hair covers the face, being naked. The mouth is as thin as the eye of a needle, extremely emaciated. Like that, being naked, with hair covering the body, like erecting a wheel of bones. Holding a skull, repulsive, crying and running everywhere. Exhausted by hunger and thirst, oppressed by suffering, emitting a pitiful sound, experiencing painful feelings. What terrible sins did that person commit in the human world, that they experience such terrifying suffering? The Blessed One said: Maudgalyāyana's son, that woman is one who commits sinful deeds. Do you want to hear about her actions? Monks, please listen. Maudgalyāyana's son, then listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Maudgalyāyana's son, in the distant past, in this Fortunate Aeon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Guide of Beings to be Tamed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Treasury, appeared in the world. He resided and dwelt in the Deer Park where the hermits spoke in the city of Varanasi. Then, in that city of Varanasi, there was the wife of a householder, who was miserly and stingy, always clinging to possessions. She would not even give food to crows, let alone to other beggars. When she saw ascetics, Brahmins, the poor and destitute, and the hungry, she would hate them in her heart. Once, a beggar came to her house. When she saw him, she became miserly and hated him in her heart, thinking: If I honor this person, he will come again later.
