And, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who are worshipped and known by the Garudas, the Kimnaras, and the great pot-bellied ones, endowed with great merit, having obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for sickness, and medicinal supplies, together with the community of Shravakas, resided in the Bamboo Grove Kalandaka in Rajagriha. Then, the venerable Mahamoggallana, in the morning, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, took his bowl and went to Rajagriha for alms, and after having alms in Rajagriha, having eaten his meal, abandoning the taking of after-meal snacks, having put down his bowl and Dharma robes, went to the Vulture Peak Mountain, and having arrived, ascended the Vulture Peak Mountain, and for the sake of dwelling during the day, sat down under a tree. Then, the venerable Mahamoggallana saw a female preta, sitting naked like a burning tree stump, covering herself with her own hair, her belly as big as a mountain, her mouth as small as the eye of a needle, burning, intensely burning, completely burning, with flames burning together, being scorched and uttering a distressed sound, experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, smelling foul like feces, extremely foul, eating feces as food, and even that not easily found. Having seen this, the venerable Mahamoggallana became displeased and asked the female preta: What evil deeds did you do in the past that you are experiencing such a result? The female preta said: Venerable Mahamoggallana, I have been committing evil deeds, please report this matter to the Buddha Bhagavat, and he will tell you the nature of my karma, and having heard that, other sentient beings will also abandon evil deeds. Then, the venerable Mahamoggallana went to where the Bhagavat was. At that time, the Bhagavat, having arisen from meditative absorption, was teaching the fourfold assembly the Dharma flavor, which is like unboiled honey, and countless retinues were also listening to everything with Dharma flavor from the Bhagavat without moving their senses. Then, the Buddha Bhagavat

Those who had passed away spoke clearly, spoke sweetly, saying, "Come back, welcome!" They were smiling before. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Maudgalyayana, "Maudgalyayana, come back! Welcome! Where have you come from just now?" Maudgalyayana replied, "Venerable, I was wandering in the realm of pretas, and there I saw a female preta whose body was like a burning tree stump, naked, covered with her own hair. Her belly was as big as a mountain, but her mouth was as small as the eye of a needle. Burning, intensely burning, extremely burning, burning like a single flame, she uttered sounds of burning and suffering. Experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, she could dry up rivers and wells just by being seen. When it rained, a rain of ashes with sparks of fire fell upon her. Like feces, she emitted a foul odor, an extremely foul odor, and sought feces as food. Moreover, I saw that she could not easily find food.

O! Then, that merchant's wife developed a miserly mind, thinking: If I give this person food today, he will come again tomorrow. So, she went to one side, filled the bowl with excrement, covered it with rice on top, and offered it to that Pratyekabuddha. Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not use their wisdom to observe until they have paid attention, so he accepted it. After accepting it, he felt it and thought: This smells bad, it must be filled with excrement. Then, that great being threw the bowl somewhere and left. The Blessed One said: What do you think, son of Maudgalyayana? At that time, the one who was the merchant's wife was this female preta. After she did such a sinful deed, from then on, she was always born in hells, as animals, and as pretas, always eating excrement as food. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, one should strive to abandon miserliness, so that one does not suffer such a fault as that female preta, son of Maudgalyayana, you should learn in this way. After the Blessed One said this, the venerable son of Maudgalyayana, as well as gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and other beings, were delighted and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The so-called son of Maudgalyayana was honored, respected, revered, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit, and obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies, resided with the Sangha of Shravakas in the Kalanda Grove of Light in Rajagriha. At that time,
