So it was. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a wealthy merchant who possessed great wealth and enjoyment, had vast and extensive holdings, possessed the wealth of the son of Vaishravana, and could even rival the wealth of the son of Vaishravana. Then one day, he went to the grove of King Prasenajit. There, he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, radiating a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, and perfect like a moving mountain of jewels. Having seen him, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. The Bhagavan taught him the Dharma that would cause him to become weary of samsara. Having heard it, he developed a revulsion for samsara and an admiration for nirvana, and thus he renounced in the Bhagavan's teachings, becoming well-known and endowed with great merit. Thus, he obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, remedies for illness, and medicines. He hoarded all the possessions he obtained, and did not share them with those who practiced the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya, purity;梵行) with him. Thereafter, constantly relying on, cultivating, and increasing his miserliness, he died while being extremely attached to his possessions, and was reborn as a preta (饿鬼) in his own dwelling. Then, those who practiced the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya, purity;梵行) with him struck the tailless gandi (犍椎,一种木制或金属的打击乐器), and took out the bones. Then, they made an offering of bones for his bones, and then returned to the monastery. Then, they opened the door of the dwelling, and began to take turns borrowing the robes and begging bowls. After some time, they saw a preta with ugly limbs and eyes, and an exceedingly terrifying body, holding the robes and begging bowl, sitting there. Having seen such an ugly sight, the monks became displeased, and reported it to the Bhagavan. Then, in order to benefit that son of a noble family, to cause the assembly of disciples to develop renunciation, and to accurately reveal the unpleasant ripening of miserliness, the Bhagavan had the Sangha of monks prepare a long meal, and the Sangha of monks in front of him.

Then he went to that place. After that, he saw the Buddha Bhagavan, whose body was well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great man, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a moving mountain of jewels, all good, and as soon as he saw him, he felt joy in the Bhagavan and became ashamed. Then, the Bhagavan rebuked that hungry ghost with a voice as deep as the thunder of rain clouds and like the sound of a drum, saying: "O good-faced one, you have accomplished this Dharma robe and bowl for the sake of your own destruction, and therefore you were born as a hungry ghost." Now, again, feel joy in me, and do not be attached to these implements, and it will be good. If you die from this again, you will be born among the hell beings. Then, that hungry ghost offered the Dharma robe and bowl to the Sangha, prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan, and confessed his sins. Then, the Bhagavan spoke the lineage of merit for that hungry ghost: "Whatever merit there is from this generosity, may that hungry ghost follow it, may he quickly be liberated from the world of terrible fear for hungry ghosts." Then, that hungry ghost felt joy in the Bhagavan, and after death, he was born as a hungry ghost with great magical powers. Then, that hungry ghost with great magical powers, wearing swaying earrings and bracelets, his body adorned with necklaces and belts, wearing a crown adorned with various jewels, his body smeared with saffron, Tamala leaves, and Kala, etc., on that very night, filled the containers with heavenly Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, white lotuses, and Mandara flowers, and the garden of light where the birds Kalandaka lived, the entire surroundings were illuminated by great light, and he scattered flowers to the Bhagavan, and sat before the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan also taught him the Dharma that was appropriate for him, and after hearing it, he felt joy and left. At that time, those monks who did not sleep at night and dawn, and diligently practiced, saw a great light appearing in the presence of the Bhagavan. After seeing this, they became doubtful, and the Buddha Bhag
