There were two kinds. One was to keep the summer retreat in the middle of the summer month. The other was to keep the summer retreat from the last month of autumn until ཉའི་ (nakshatra, name of a constellation). There, the monks changed the color of their bowls, washed and boiled their robes, and sewed their clothes. Then, after a while, a monk wanted to sew his robe, but he could not thread the needle, so he cried out "Pity, pity," and "Suffering, suffering," and muttered, "Is there anyone in the world who wants merit? Is there anyone in the world who wants merit?" The Blessed One was also walking not far from him. Then, the Blessed One stretched out his hand like an elephant's trunk, and with a voice that was deep, melodious, clear, as pleasing as the voice of a kalaviṅka bird, and as pleasant as the sound of a great drum, He said: Monk, I am the one in the world who wants merit. Then, that monk heard the Blessed One's voice with five qualities, and bowed respectfully, immediately took it from the Blessed One's hand, placed it on his head, and said: Blessed One, this hand of yours has accumulated generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom for countless eons, yet now the Blessed One still says, Monk, am I the one in the world who wants merit? The Blessed One said: Monk, I am not satisfied with merit. Monk, because I have tasted the flavor of merit, therefore I am not satisfied with merit. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Blessed One, it is wonderful that you are not satisfied with the creation of merit. The Blessed One said: Monks, now the Thus-Gone One is free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil, is all-knowing, is all-knowing, and has all wisdom and knowledge.

What is so amazing about someone who has already completely ruled everything? In the past, when I was stained by desire, stained by hatred, stained by ignorance, and not completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and strife, I was not satisfied with virtuous actions. Listen well and keep in mind what I will say. Monks, in the past, in the royal palace called Great Sound of Peace, there was a king named Peaceful who ruled. During his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, happiness, good harvests, filled with people and many people, disputes and fights were pacified, there was no quarreling or internal strife, thieves, famine, and diseases were absent, and there were rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffaloes. There was no harm, and he ruled the kingdom like caring for an only child. That king was also endowed with faith, virtuous and with good intentions, engaged in benefiting himself and others, with great compassion, greatness, desiring the Dharma, loving all beings, completely giving all gifts, giving completely without attachment, abiding in great generosity. Then, the next morning, he would rise early and go to the hall of offerings and give food to those who desired food, give drink to those who desired drink, give clothes to those who desired clothes, and completely give away wealth, grain, conch shells, gold, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, coral, and red coral. However, he was not satisfied with virtuous actions. He would go to the retinue of the queen and give food and drink to the retinue of the queen. He would give food and drink to the sons, ministers, warriors, army chiefs, townspeople, and villagers. Then, King Peaceful thought to himself: I have satisfied the people, so what shall I use to satisfy the remaining small creatures? He (thought thus).

Having completely given away all possessions, wearing only one garment, his body became very weak, he thought: I should give my body to the tiny beings. So he began to cut his body, wherever there were flesh flies, long-beaked insects, etc., he abandoned his body there, and like treating an only son, he satisfied them with blood. The Lord of the Gods, Indra, knowing this with his mind, thought: Is this King Shibi doing this for the benefit of sentient beings? Or is it just out of compassion? I should test him. Then he transformed himself into an eagle, like the remnants of hail, and like something the color of ink. He flew to King Shibi and tried to peck at the king's eyes with his beak, but the king was not afraid. He looked at the eagle with large, compassionate eyes and said: Child, take whatever you want from my body, and be happy. Then the Lord of the Gods, Indra, was very happy, transformed himself into the form of a Brahmin, stood before King Shibi and said: King, please give me your eyes. The king said: Alas, Brahmin, there is no obstacle to my body, take whatever you want. Then the Lord of the Gods, Indra, was even more pleased, the form of the Brahmin disappeared, he returned to his own form, made the king happy, and said: King, well done! Well done! Your mind is very firm, your wishes are unshakable. Your stream of great compassion for sentient beings continues to flow. Since you are so fearless of fearful things, you will not be long, through this effort, you will attain the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? The King Shibi at that time was me, and even then I was not satisfied with accumulating merit, let alone now? Monks, therefore, you should train like this, giving, etc.
