The foolish Devadatta, for the sake of the Blessed One's death, also released the elephant protector of wealth, also scattered poisonous powder, and also sent executioners. He had been an executioner, enemy, and unfriendly person to the Blessed One for a long time. The Blessed One, however, dwelt in loving-kindness, beneficial thoughts, and compassionate thoughts towards him. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, like this, Devadatta is striving for the sake of the Blessed One's death, but the Blessed One dwells in loving-kindness, beneficial thoughts, and compassionate thoughts towards him." The Blessed One said: "Monks, now the Thus-Gone One is free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil, is all-knowing, all-aspect knowing, and has attained mastery over all wisdom and knowledge. What is so amazing about this? In the past, when I still had desire, hatred, and delusion, even when I was sent to be killed in my youth, I did not harbor hatred towards him. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta who ruled. During his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, peace, good harvests, and it was filled with people and many people. Strife and disputes were pacified, and there was no turmoil, internal strife, thieves, famine, and diseases. It was abundant with rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. There was no harm, and he ruled the kingdom like guarding a single son with thorns. That king was also faithful, virtuous, and kind-hearted, engaged in benefiting himself and others, had great compassion, was great-minded, desired the Dharma, loved beings, gave everything, completely gave everything away, gave completely without attachment, and dwelt in great generosity. The king

At that time, there was a queen named Evil Wisdom, who was fierce, angry, and prejudiced. She had a son named Protector of the Dharma. That young Protector of the Dharma was full of faith, virtuous, and of good mind. He was engaged in benefiting himself and others, was greatly compassionate, of great character, desired the Dharma, and was loving to all beings. When the Brahmins and householders living in Varanasi saw him, they found him lovely, pitiable, very dear, and pleasing. Then he went to the abbot and studied letters together with the children. Later, one time, when the king was in the season of spring, when the trees were full of flowers, and geese, cranes, peacocks, parrots, squirrels, cuckoos, and wagtails were making sounds in the forest, he went to the garden with the virtuous queen and the queen's attendants serving him. In that garden, as the king was playing with the queen's attendants, Queen Evil Wisdom was disturbed, overcome by jealousy and anger. The king offered her half of the drink he had taken, and she, being disturbed, sent a message to the king: 'If I were to drink the half you drank, may I drink the blood of my son!' There is nothing that cannot be done as a sinful deed when indulging in desire. Then, although the king had the blessing of Brahma, he was overcome by the attachment of desire. Even though the queen's attendants pleaded, the fire of her anger blazed. She grew even angrier and commanded, 'Today, cut off the neck of the boy Protector of the Dharma and let his blood flow!' Then, the boy Protector of the Dharma, hearing this while staying in the children's monastery, wept and said, 'In samsara, the disharmony of sentient beings is the worst, that they would kill even their own son out of anger!' Then, the boy Protector of the Dharma, adorned with all ornaments, prostrated at his father's feet and pleaded, 'O Father, I beseech you, O Father, I, your beloved son, even though I have not committed any fault, why do you not spare me from being killed?' The king replied, 'Beloved son, if your mother can forgive you, then I will also forgive you.'

Then, the Dharma-protecting child, weeping, went to his mother, knelt at her feet, and with palms joined, said: Mother, please be patient, do not kill me! He spoke such pitiable words, uttering miserable sounds, but even hearing his painful cries, his mother did not forgive him. Then, the executioners, with sharp swords, cut off the head of the Dharma-protecting child, and fed the blood to the wicked queen, but even so, the wicked queen had no remorse. The Dharma-protecting child, with joy in his heart towards his parents and the executioners, then passed away. The Blessed One declared: Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that moment, the one who became the Dharma-protecting child was none other than myself. That wicked queen was Devadatta; even when I fell into the hands of the executioners, he generated a mind of loving-kindness towards me, and even now, as he strives to kill me, I still cherish him with loving-kindness, with thoughts of benefit, with thoughts of compassion. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: You should cultivate a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised the words of the Blessed One. Named "Peaceful One": The Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored, respected, revered, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies. Together with the Sangha of Shravaka monks, while residing in Shravasti, he stayed in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, in Shravasti, the monks were assembled.
