began to cut those. When that Bodhisattva was cutting his body in that way, he spread loving-kindness to those sentient beings and warm tears dripped from his face. He thought, 'My flesh and blood will make these sentient beings happy, I have really gained a good gain.' In this way, for twelve years, he satisfied those sentient beings with his own flesh and blood, and he did not turn away from the unexcelled perfect enlightenment. When the disease of those sentient beings subsided, the great fish Rohita made a sound: 'O sentient beings, listen! I am the lotus king, and for your sake, I have given up my life and taken such a body. Please be happy with me, and when I attain the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, I will free you forever from disease, and make you laugh in the ultimate attainment of Nirvana and happiness.' After hearing these words, those crowds of people, the king, the ministers, and the people of the palace court gained faith, and offered flowers, garlands, and perfumes, and prayed: 'You are doing extremely difficult things, and when you attain the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, may we become your Shravaka disciples.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, what do you think? At that time, the lotus king was me. Because I made such a complete giving, I experienced infinite happiness when I was in samsara. Now, when I attain the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, the temperature of my stomach is balanced and has digestive power. Therefore, what I eat, drink, chew, and taste is well digested, and I become healthy and harmless, and have a healthy nature. Monks, therefore, you should learn like this, you should cultivate compassion for all sentient beings.' Monks, you should learn like that.

It should be written. The Blessed One having thus spoken, those monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The so-called "one mouthful" means that the Blessed Buddha was revered, respected, esteemed, and worshiped by all the kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the royal palace, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Blessed Buddha, who was worshiped and known by the gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and was endowed with robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and other necessities. Together with the monastic community of shravakas, he resided in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, the garden of Prince Jeta, built by the householder Anathapindika. At that time, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, if beings also knew the result of giving as I do, and knew the ripening result of the distribution of giving, then even the last mouthful of food, or the remaining food, if they could find a worthy recipient, they would not eat it before giving or distributing it, and their minds would not be bound by stinginess. It is precisely because beings do not know the result of giving as I do, and do not know the ripening result of the distribution of giving, that they eat without giving or distributing it, due to their clinging minds, and their minds are also bound by stinginess. The Blessed One having thus spoken, the Sugata having thus spoken, the Teacher again

Thus it was said. The ripening of the divisions, how it becomes meaningful, as the great sage said. If sentient beings knew, they would not eat without giving, and would not become miserly. Their minds of constant grasping would never arise. Why is it that children, obscured by ignorance, do not understand? Therefore, with minds of constant grasping, they always eat without giving. After they develop miserliness, their minds are completely entangled. When the Blessed One was teaching this sutra, the monks developed doubts. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable One, the Blessed One also praised giving, and also taught the ripening of the fruits of giving. It is truly wonderful! The Blessed One said: Monks, the Tathagata also speaks of the praise of giving, and also speaks of the ripening of the fruits of giving. What is so wonderful about this? In the past, even the mouthful of food that had already come to my mouth for the sake of begging, I completely gave away. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadatta who ruled as king. During his reign, there was wealth and prosperity, peace and good harvests, people and many beings were abundant, strife and fighting ceased, wars and civil wars, thieves and famine, and diseases were absent. Rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffaloes were abundant. There was no harm, and he ruled the kingdom like caring for an only child, eliminating thorns. That king was also full of faith, virtuous, and with good intentions. He engaged in benefiting himself and others, was greatly compassionate, magnanimous, loved the Dharma, was kind to all beings, gave away all possessions, gave without attachment, and abided in great generosity. Later, for a time, a great famine occurred, like an intermediate kalpa of famine. Then, the multitude of beings died in a time that was not a famine.
