Adorned with a fathom, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns. He saw the all-good, like a walking mountain of jewels. Having seen it, he contemplated for a very long time, then drew a line on the ground and requested the Bhagavan: 'O Gautama, until I receive five hundred karshapanas, please do not cross this line.' Then, the Bhagavan, in order to not let good deeds go to waste, and to prevent taking what is not given, remained as if erecting a threshold. Then, in Shravasti, the word spread that 'The Bhagavan is on the great road, and a Brahmin is not letting him go for five hundred karshapanas.' Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala, upon hearing this, accompanied by a retinue of ministers, went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, said to the Bhagavan: 'Please allow me to make offerings, please let the Bhagavan depart.' The Bhagavan replied: 'Great King, these are not to be given by you, these need to be given by someone else.' Similarly, the earth-holding goddess, the chief of the queen's retinue, the sage Datta, the ancients, Indra, Brahma, and other gods, as well as Vaishravana's son and others, also brought gold and silver. If they went to the Bhagavan, the Bhagavan would also say to them: 'These are not to be given by you either.' Then, after some time, Anathapindika heard of this, and placed five hundred karshapanas on top of a golden tray filled with gold and silver, and went to the Bhagavan, saying: 'Please accept these, Bhagavan.' The Bhagavan replied: 'Householder, these are to be given by you, please give them to the Brahmin.' Then, Anathapindika gave the golden tray filled with gold to the Brahmin. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: 'Bhagavan, this Brahmin did not even allow the Bhagavan to leave, but watched Anathapindika offer karshapanas. Bhagavan, how long will this person's debt last?'

Okay. The Blessed One said: Monks, do you wish to listen? Venerable ones, we wish to listen. Monks, then listen well and carefully, keep it in mind, and I will speak. Monks, in the past, long ago, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadatta ruling. During his reign, the country was wealthy, prosperous, peaceful, had good harvests, was full of people and inhabitants, disputes and fights were pacified, there were no wars, civil wars, thieves, famines, and diseases, and it was abundant with rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffaloes. There was no harm, and he ruled the country like protecting an only child. Later, his son became the crown prince. During the spring season, when the trees were full of flowers, and swans, geese, peacocks, parrots, tits, cuckoos, and mynah birds were singing in the forest, he was served by the sons of ministers, playing and enjoying themselves with great joy. Among them, there was a minister's son who played dice with another gambler. The minister's son was defeated by that man by five hundred Karshapanas. The king's son also guaranteed for him, but that man, relying on his power, thought, "I am the king's son," and did not pay. Monks, what do you think? The one who became the king's son at that time was me. The minister's son was Anathapindika. The gambler was this Brahmin. Because I guaranteed for him, he thought, "I am the king's son," and did not pay the Karshapanas to the gambler. Therefore, I experienced endless poverty in samsara, and even now, when I have attained perfect enlightenment as a Buddha, he is still collecting the debt. Monks, therefore, actions that are definitely black will definitely have black results. Actions that are definitely white will definitely have white results. Mixed actions will have mixed results. Monks, therefore, regarding actions

Be sure to abandon the black ones and the seducers, and be sure to entrust the work to the pure white ones alone. You must also strive to avoid taking what is not given, so that you, the monks, will not commit such faults. You should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. The Hundred Parables Beginning with the Elephant, in Ten Volumes, called Very Good: The Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, navigators, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers. They revered him, made him their guru, drew pictures of him, and made offerings to him. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was worshiped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicines, and medical supplies. He was dwelling with the monastic community of hearers in the grove of twin sala trees in the vicinity of the city of Kushinagara. Then, when the Blessed One was about to pass into complete nirvana, he said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, the Thus-Gone One will pass into complete nirvana into the realm of nirvana without remainder of aggregates tonight at midnight. Therefore, prepare a bed for the Thus-Gone One between the twin sala trees, and point the pillow to the north. Then the monk replied, "So be it." Ananda, having heard the Blessed One's words, prepared a bed between the twin sala trees, pointed the pillow to the north, and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, the bed of the Thus-Gone One has been prepared between the twin sala trees."
