His head was like an umbrella, his arms were long, his forehead was broad, his nose was high, his nose was well-formed, his eyebrows were thick, and he was born with all his limbs complete. When he was born, they held a birth celebration and discussed what to name the boy. The ministers said, "This boy has been seeking well-spoken words since before he was born. Therefore, let this boy's name be 'Seeking Well-Spoken Words.'" So they named him Seeking Well-Spoken Words. Then, the boy Seeking Well-Spoken Words was entrusted to eight nurses: two nurses who nursed him in their laps, two nurses who gave him milk, two nurses who washed away dirt, and two nurses who played with him. These eight nurses raised him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of butter, and other excellent provisions, and he grew vigorously like a lotus in a lake. When he grew up, he still sought well-spoken words, but found none. Then, after his father died, he was made king and instructed the ministers: "O chiefs of the land, I need well-spoken words, so seek well-spoken words for me." Then, those ministers, in order to seek well-spoken words, showed billions of gold pieces throughout Jambudvipa, but they did not find well-spoken words. Then they reported to the king. Then that king, because he desired to hear well-spoken words, was distressed and disappointed. The lord of the gods, Indra, has the ability to see what is below. Seeing that the king was impoverished by hearing well-spoken words, he thought, "I should test the king." Then the lord of the gods, Indra, transformed into the form of a yaksha with ugly limbs and eyes, and spoke verses before the king: Virtuous conduct, the Dharma, should be practiced. Evil conduct should not be done. In this world and the next, Practicing the Dharma will lead to happiness. Then the king was amazed and radiant, and said to the yaksha, "O secret one, please speak that verse again, I want to hear it." Then the yaksha said to the king, "If what I say

If you do it, then after that I will do as you command. The king said: What do you command me? The yaksha said: For seven days and nights, light a fire in the fire pit with sandalwood. If you yourself jump into it, then after that I will recite verses for you. When the king heard that, he was happy and said to the yaksha: I will do that. Then the king made the yaksha take an oath and proclaimed throughout the country: From today, in seven days, in order to hear the king's well-spoken words, he will jump into the fire pit himself. Whoever among you wants to see a miracle, come here. Then, in order to understand the pure superior intention of the Bodhisattva, and in order to see the miracle, hundreds of thousands of people gathered, and hundreds of thousands of gods gathered in the sky. Among them, the yaksha rose into the sky and said to the Bodhisattva: Great King, please do as you have promised! Then the king enthroned his eldest son as king, confessed his sins to the ministers, the people of the towns, and the people of the country, reassured the crowds, and went to the fire pit and spoke this verse: For the sake of the Dharma, I jump into the burning pit of embers, like the blood-red sun. My mind is determined to jump into the terrifying depths, I have no fear for my life. This fire pit, by the power of my merit, will become a very beautiful pond, filled with cool water anointed with sandalwood paste and lotus flowers. Having said this, the Bodhisattva jumped into the fire pit. As soon as he jumped, the fire pit turned into a pond. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, seeing that amazing miracle that made gods and humans believe, made the form of the yaksha disappear. Then he appeared in his own form and spoke this verse: Good conduct, the Dharma, should be practiced. Evil conduct should not be done. In this world and the next, practicing the Dharma will rely on happiness. Then the Bodhisattva

Therefore, having kept those verses in mind, they were written on golden plates and circulated throughout the towns, villages, regions, and royal palaces of Jambudvipa. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? The king at that time was I, and at that time, in order to hear the well-spoken words, I gave up my life, let alone now. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: you should respect the Dharma, you should honor the Dharma as your teacher, you should depict the Dharma, you should make offerings to the Dharma. Having respected the Dharma, honored the Dharma as your teacher, depicted the Dharma, and made offerings to the Dharma, you should rely on it and abide by it. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The one called "Anāthapiṇḍada" was revered, honored as a teacher, depicted, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. While dwelling in Shravasti with the monastic community of shravakas, he resided in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the pleasure garden of the householder Anāthapiṇḍada. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, took his bowl, and went to Shravasti for alms. Then, after some time, he gradually went and entered a great road, and a Brahmin also came to that great road. Then he saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, whose body was well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, and radiant.
