It became like a father. Later, there was a great drought for some time, which caused the rivers and wells to have less water, and the trees had no flowers or fruits. Then, that hermit was unhappy because there was no food in that place, so he stripped the deer's habitat and the bark of the trees. Then, the rabbit saw that it had become like that, and asked, "Great hermit, where are you going?" The hermit said, "Now I am going to the village, where I will live on cooked food." Then, when it heard the hermit's words, it felt sad, thinking it was like being separated from its father. So, it prostrated at the feet of that hermit and said: "Please do not abandon me. In short, the home is a place full of many faults, while the solitary place is a place endowed with perfect qualities." Even though he answered many times, he could not stop him. Then, the rabbit said: "If you cannot not go, please stay today. Go wherever you want to go tomorrow." Then, that hermit thought: "These beings born in the animal realm, because they are attached to suffering and so on, it must be that it wants to borrow some food from me today, definitely," so he agreed to it. Then, after the daytime work was done, when evening came, the rabbit came, circled around that hermit, and asked for forgiveness: "Great hermit, because I was born in the animal realm, I do not know what to do and what not to do, if there is anything I have offended you, please forgive me." After saying that, he jumped into the fire without hesitation. Then, that hermit became unhappy, and crying, he took it out, held it in his arms like treating his only child, and asked: "Child, what are you doing?" The rabbit said: "Great hermit, because you like the solitary place, please eat my meat and sustain your life for one day. In short, don't rabbits that grow in forest caves have pods, sesame seeds, and rice? Please burn my body to liberate me. Please eat my meat and stay in the hermitage today." Then, when that hermit heard the rabbit's words, he became unhappy and said: "If that is the case, you are too lovable."

Because I love caves and monasteries, even if I lose my life in this place, I will not go to the easy village. Then, when the rabbit heard those words, its mind became joyful, and looking up at the sky, it prayed, saying: Even if I go to the monastery, if my mind delights in solitude, by the truth of those words, may a great and powerful rain fall. It also said this. As soon as it said that, by the power of the Bodhisattva, all the places of great power shook. The gods entered into the vision of knowing downwards, wondering what had happened, and saw that it was the power of the Bodhisattva. Then, after a while, the lord of the gods, Indra, caused a great and powerful rain to fall in that dwelling place, and afterwards grass, reeds, medicines, flowers, and abundant fruits grew again. Then that hermit, relying on the virtuous friend rabbit, while dwelling there, directly realized the five superknowledges. Then that hermit said to the rabbit: O rabbit, what do you think you will accomplish with this nature of doing asceticism, diligence, and compassion? The rabbit replied: May I become a Buddha who guides the blind world that has no guide and no complete guide, liberates beings who have not been liberated, releases beings who have not been released, gives breath to beings who have no breath, and completely releases beings who have not completely been released from suffering. Then that hermit, hearing those words, said to the rabbit: When you become a Buddha, please remember me as well. The rabbit said: I will do so. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? Who was it that became a rabbit at that time and at that moment? It was I. The hermit was this son of good family. Monks, therefore you should train in this way: rely on virtuous friends, virtuous companions, virtuous supports, and virtuous dwellings, and do not rely on evil friends, evil companions, evil supports, and evil dwellings. Monks, you should train in that way. Then the venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: Venerable, here I am alone in a solitary place.

Having settled down and entered into meditation, such a mental discrimination arose in his mind: 'Good spiritual friends, good companions, and good supports are half of the pure conduct, while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that.' The Blessed One said: 'Ananda, do not say that good spiritual friends, good companions, and good supports are half of the pure conduct, while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Why is that? Ananda, good spiritual friends, good companions, and good supports are the complete, unmixed, perfect, pure, and purified pure conduct, while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Why is that? Ananda, relying on good spiritual friends, sentient beings who are subject to birth will be completely liberated from the law of birth, and sentient beings who are subject to aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion will be completely liberated from aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion. Ananda, therefore, you should understand in this way that good spiritual friends, good companions, and good supports are the complete, unmixed, perfect, pure, and purified pure conduct, while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Ananda, you should train in this way.' After the Blessed One said this, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. Seeking the Dharma, is the kings to the Buddha, the Blessed One...
