The great ministers, the wealthy, the people around the palace, the merchants, the captains, the gods, the nagas, the yakshas, the asuras, the garudas, the kinnaras, and the mahoragas paid homage, respected, revered, and made offerings. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was worshipped and known by the gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of the Shravakas, he resided in Jeta's Grove, the pleasure garden of Anathapindika in Shravasti. At that time, Anathapindika, according to custom, rose early in the morning and went to see the Blessed One, and he himself used a hand towel to sweep Jeta's Grove. Then, one day, Anathapindika was somewhat busy. Then, the Blessed One, in order to show the abode of merit to those beings who desired merit, personally took a broom and swept Jeta's Grove. The great Shravakas Shariputra, Maudgalyayana, Kashyapa, Ananda, Nanda, and others also saw the Blessed One and began to participate in the sweeping. Then, the Blessed One and the great Shravakas swept Jeta's Grove and went to the assembly hall, where they sat on the seats prepared for the monastic community of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, these five are the benefits of sweeping. Which five? One's own mind becomes joyful, others' minds become joyful, the gods are pleased, the roots of virtue such as increasing beauty, and after death, one is born in the happy realm, the high world of heaven, among the gods." Then, Anathapindika also went in that direction, and he was with the Blessed One and the great Shravakas.

Then he swept. Having heard it said that Prince Victory Banner's garden had been swept, he thought to himself, "How can I walk on the place that the Blessed One and the great disciples have swept together?" Then Anāthapiṇḍada, with a very cautious and ashamed mind, stayed in that very place. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, ask even though they know. The Blessed One said to the monks, "Who is this?" Then the monks replied, "Venerable One, it is Anāthapiṇḍada. He is very cautious and ashamed of the Blessed One, and thus, since the Blessed One and the great disciples have swept together, and Prince Victory Banner's garden has been swept, he treads on it with his feet and does not dare to come before the Blessed One." Then the Blessed One said to him, "Householder, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, respect the Dharma, and the teacher of the Arhats is the Dharma. Therefore, recite the Buddha's teachings and come inside!" Then Anāthapiṇḍada spoke in verses and went before the Blessed One. Having arrived, he prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then the Blessed One taught him the Dharma, made him believe, made him rejoice, and made him happy. Then the Blessed One taught him the Dharma in many ways, made him believe, made him rejoice, and made him happy, and then he left the presence of the Blessed One. Then the monks became doubtful. The one who cuts off all doubts, they reported to the Buddha, the Blessed One, "Venerable One, the Blessed One has developed respect and reverence for the Dharma, and it is wonderful that he only speaks of the praise of the Dharma!" The Blessed One said, "Monks, now the Tathāgata is free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, and from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and turmoil, completely liberated, is all-knowing."

, all-knowing. Once one has mastered all wisdom and knowledge, one develops reverence and respect for the Dharma. What is so surprising about merely praising the Dharma? In the past, when I was stained by desire, stained by hatred, stained by ignorance, and not completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and strife, I also gave up my life entirely for the sake of the Dharma. Listen well, keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in a past age, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta who ruled. During his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, peace, good harvests, many people, disputes and quarrels were pacified, there was no unrest, internal strife, thieves, famine, and diseases, and there were rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. There was no harm, thorns were cleared away, and he ruled the country like caring for an only son. That king was also endowed with faith, kind and with good intentions, engaged in benefiting himself and others, greatly compassionate, magnanimous, desiring the Dharma, loving beings, giving all things, completely giving up all things, giving without attachment, and abiding in great generosity. Then, one day, he was playing and enjoying himself with his queen. As he was playing and enjoying himself, one day the queen became pregnant and had the thought of wanting to hear well-spoken words (subhāṣita), so she told the king. The king also summoned the diviners, and they said that it was the power of the deva. Then, that king, in order to find someone who spoke well-spoken words, took hundreds of millions of gold and went around towns, villages, suburbs, and around the royal palace, but he did not find that person who spoke well-spoken words. After some time, after nine months had passed, a son was born, and that boy had a good figure, looked lovely and beautiful, had a good complexion, and was golden in color.
