Having become a "ga," he bowed his head to the feet of the Bhagavan and sat before the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan taught him the Dharma that would cause him to become weary of samsara. Having heard this, he regarded samsara as faulty and nirvana as virtuous. Having been permitted by his parents, he went forth into the teachings of the Bhagavan. Having thus gone forth, he gathered and dwelt together with those relatives. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to turn him away from associating with householders, caused him to enter into dwelling in a secluded place, but he was not pleased with that. Then, the Bhagavan three times turned him away from associating with householders, saying, 'Son, associating with householders has many faults, for there are forms that can be known by the eye, which are lovely, desirable, pleasing, agreeable, endowed with desire, causing attachment, and like thorns; and sounds that can be known by the ear; and smells that can be known by the nose; and tastes that can be known by the tongue; and tactile sensations that can be known by the body, which are lovely, desirable, pleasing, agreeable, endowed with desire, causing attachment, and like thorns.' Wherever one dwells, the virtues of a secluded place, where virtuous Dharmas increase, are praised in many ways. Then, after a while, that son of good family, relying on the virtuous friend, the Bhagavan, also constantly striving, practicing, and exerting himself in dwelling in a secluded place, realized that this wheel of samsara of the five aggregates is wavering and unstable. He thoroughly understood that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, decline, disintegration, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from desire for the three realms, is equal to gold and gravel, possesses a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, has become cool like being immersed in sandalwood, has shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, has obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual self-awareness, does not look to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and has

Worshiped by the gods, including me and my relatives, it became a place worthy of respect and reverence. Then, recalling his past life and also seeing the Bhagavan practicing extremely difficult practices, he went to the Bhagavan and praised and drew pictures with reverence. Then, the monks became doubtful. To cut off all doubts, they asked the Buddha Bhagavan: Venerable Bhagavan, please look, this son of good family has been driven out of the village three times and placed in a solitary place until he has attained Arhatship. The Bhagavan said: Monks, now the Tathagata is free from attachment, free from hatred, free from delusion, completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil, and is all-knowing, all-knowing, and has mastered all wisdom and knowledge. When he attains these, what is so amazing about this son of good family being driven out of the village three times and placed in a solitary place until he attains Arhatship? In the past, when I was not completely liberated from attachment, hatred, delusion, birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil, I also gave up my own life and drove this son of good family out of the village and placed him in a solitary place. Listen well and remember well, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in a valley where streams flowed, and flowers, fruits, and stones were abundant, there lived a hermit who practiced severe austerities, living on fruits, roots, and water, wearing animal skins, and burning sacrificial fires. That hermit also had a friend, a rabbit who knew human speech. That rabbit went to the hermit three times a day. Having gone there, he greeted him respectfully, made him very happy with all kinds of talk, and the two of them became friends.
