Mothers, lights, small virtues, immeasurable virtues, increasing virtues, cloudless ones, merit-born ones, great fruits, great people, human lineages, splendid lights, extremely visible ones, having gone to the gods of Akanistha, proclaimed the sound of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Two verses are also recited: Strive for renunciation. Join the Buddha's teachings. Like an elephant entering a reed house, destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever practices diligently in this Dharma and Discipline, having completely abandoned the cycle of birth, will bring suffering to an end. Thus it is said. Then those rays of light circled the three thousand great thousand world realms and followed after the Blessed One. If the Blessed One wished to prophesy past actions, they would not appear on the Blessed One's robe. If he wished to prophesy future actions, they would not appear in front. If he wished to prophesy that beings would be born in hell, they would not appear on the soles of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as animals, they would not appear on the heels of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as pretas, they would not appear on his big toes. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as humans, they would not appear on his two knees. If he wished to prophesy that they would become a Wheel-Turning King by force, they would not appear on the palm of his left hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would become a Wheel-Turning King, they would not appear on the palm of his right hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as gods, they would not appear on his navel. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the Bodhi of a Hearer, they would not appear on his face. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the Bodhi of a Solitary Buddha, they would not appear on the white hair between his eyebrows. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Bodhi, they would not appear on the crown of his head. Then those rays of light surrounded the Blessed One.

After circumambulating the Buddha three times, the urna hair between the eyebrows of the Blessed One disappeared. Then, the Venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, requested the Blessed One: 'Various lights, interwoven with a thousand colors, have emerged from the gate of your mouth. They illuminate all directions, just as the rising sun does.' He further supplicated in verse: 'The Buddha, free from noise, not fond of gluttony, abandoning laziness, is the supreme cause for beings. The victorious Tathagatas, without cause or reason, do not show a smile like a lotus stalk or the color of a conch shell. Since you know the opportune time with your steadfast wisdom, the ascetics and kings seeking to listen, I beseech you to dispel the doubts arising in the minds of the virtuous with the steadfast and excellent words of the Buddha, the lion among men. The protectors, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, steadfast like the ocean and Mount Meru, do not usually show a smile easily. For what reason, O Hero, do you show a smile? Most people desire to hear the answer from you.' The Blessed One said: 'Ananda, it is indeed so. Ananda, it is indeed so. The Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, do not show a smile without cause or reason. Ananda, do you see this person named Manyanpa, who has made me happy? Venerable One, I see him.' Ananda, this Manyanpa, with his roots of virtue, generating the mind of enlightenment, and completely giving away what is to be given, will become a Pratyekabuddha named 'Transcending Samsara' in the future. The Dharma he gives is this faith he has in me. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves thus: to respect the Buddhas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Shravakas. Monks, you should train yourselves thus.' After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. 'The Rising Fragrance' refers to the offerings made to the Buddha, the Blessed One, by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, ship captains, and gods.

And the Nagas, and the Yakshas, and the Asuras, and the Garudas, and the Kinnaras, and the Mahoragas, paid homage, respected, revered, and made offerings. The Buddha Bhagavan, endowed with great merit, who was worshiped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies. Together with the Shravaka Sangha, he resided and stayed in the Kalanda Grove of the Radiant Garden in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir). At that time, the people living in the central region, according to custom, mostly used various perfumes to anoint their bodies. Then, after some time, there was the son of a householder, and one of his maids, who was faithful, virtuous, and of good mind, was grinding red sandalwood. The Bhagavan also, in the early morning, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, carrying his bowl, attended by a retinue of monks, with the Sangha of monks proceeding ahead, went to Rajagriha for alms. Then that girl saw the Buddha Bhagavan, whose body was well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a mountain of jewels, perfect in every way. Having seen him, that girl generated great faith. Then, having attained faith, she thought to herself: "Although I have found such a field of merit, I am unable to make offerings to the Bhagavan because of the fault of poverty, so what is the use of such a life as mine?" Then, disregarding her own life, she anointed both her hands with red sandalwood and rubbed them on the two feet of the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan also, by means of miraculous power, filled the entire city of Rajagriha with the scent of sandalwood. Then, having seen that miracle, the girl became delighted in her heart, prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan, and thought in her mind: "The root of virtue that I have done, and the generation of the mind of enlightenment, and the act of giving..."
