The characteristics were all shattered. Then they thought: Alas, have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been born elsewhere? Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Blessed One manifested an emanation. Seeing the emanation, they thought: Alas, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere. However, by the power of this unprecedented sentient being's appearance, our harmful characteristics have been shattered! They developed great joy in the emanation, and thus, the karma of experiencing hell beings was exhausted. Among gods and humans, wherever they are capable of becoming vessels of truth, they will take rebirth there. Those who go upwards are the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma retinues, the Retinues of Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Universal Virtue, the Cloudless, the Merit-born, the Great Fruit, the Non-afflicted, the Non-hot, the Well-appearing, the Well-seeing, and having gone up to the gods of Akanistha, they proclaim the sound of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. They also utter two verses: "Strive for definite emergence, Unite with the Buddha's teaching. Like an elephant destroying a reed house, Destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever in this Dharma-vinaya, Acts with mindfulness, Having completely abandoned the cycle of birth, Will cause suffering to cease." Thus they proclaim. Then, those rays of light circled the three-thousand great-thousand world system, following the Blessed One. If the Blessed One wished to prophesy past karma, they would not appear on the Blessed One's robe. If he wished to prophesy future karma, then

It will not appear. If you wish to prophesy that beings will be born in hell, then it will not appear on the soles of the feet. If you wish to prophesy that they will be born as animals, then it will not appear on the heels of the feet. If you wish to prophesy that they will be born as hungry ghosts, then it will not appear on the big toes. If you wish to prophesy that they will be born as humans, then it will not appear on the two knees. If you wish to prophesy that they will be a powerful Chakravartin king, then it will not appear on the palm of the left hand. If you wish to prophesy that they will be a Chakravartin king, then it will not appear on the palm of the right hand. If you wish to prophesy that they will be born as gods, then it will not appear on the navel. If you wish to prophesy that they will attain the Bodhi of a Shravaka, then it will not appear on the face. If you wish to prophesy that they will attain the Bodhi of a Pratyekabuddha, then it will not appear on the hair between the eyebrows. If you wish to prophesy that they will attain the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Bodhi, then it will not appear on the crown of the head. Then those rays of light circumambulated the Bhagavan three times, and disappeared into the hair between the eyebrows of the Bhagavan. Then the venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Bhagavan: "Various lights, interwoven with a thousand colors, many have come forth from the gate of your mouth, they illuminate all directions, just as the rising sun does." Again, he spoke in verses: "Free from pride, not delighting in abundance, abandoning negligence, the Buddha is the supreme cause for beings. The victorious conquerors of the enemy, without cause or condition, do not show a smile like the color of lotus roots and conch shells. Since the steadfast one knows the opportune time with his own wisdom, monks, kings, listeners, those seeking doubt, please dispel the doubts that have arisen with the supreme speech of the lion of the Shakya clan, and with good words. The protectors, the perfect Buddhas, as stable as the ocean and the king of mountains, do not usually show a smile. For what reason does the hero show a smile? Therefore, the great assembly wishes to hear from you." The Bhagavan said: "Ananda, that is..."

So it is. It is indeed so. Ananda, the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, do not smile without a reason or cause. Ananda, have you seen this householder showing me such respect? Venerable sir, I have seen it. Ananda, this householder's roots of virtue, his aspiration, and his complete offering of the Dharma of giving, will make him become a Pratyekabuddha named "Cool Light." The Dharma of giving that he offers is this faithful devotion he has towards me. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves thus: We should respect the Buddhas, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Shravakas. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. The Blessed One having spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The so-called "Listeners" are those to whom the Buddha, the Blessed One, is revered by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, navigators, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, who honor, respect, esteem, and make offerings. The gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, making offerings and knowing, the Buddha, the Blessed One, endowed with great merit, having obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicines, and medical supplies, together with the Sangha of Shravakas, traveling through the country of Magadha, then went to the bank of the Ganges River. Then, the Blessed One, attended by a gathering of monks, led by the Sangha of monks, went to where the Listeners were, and having arrived, spoke thus to the Listeners: O, please ferry me across this river. The Listeners replied: Please pay the boat fare. Then, the Blessed One spoke thus to those Listeners: In the past, I also acted as a Listener, and I rescued Nanda from the river of desire.
