Actions are like this: even in hundreds of thousands of kalpas, they will not be wasted. When the time of gathering comes, they will naturally ripen into fruit. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan named Dhvaja-raja-ishvara appeared in the world. He traveled and went to a royal palace. In that royal palace, there was a Brahmin who was well-versed in the Vedas and the branches of the Vedas, living in the royal city. Then, the Samyak-sambuddha Dhvaja-raja-ishvara Buddha, in the morning, wearing the lower garment and Dharma robes, carrying the bowl, went to that royal palace for alms. Then, that Brahmin saw the body of the Samyak-sambuddha Dhvaja-raja-ishvara Buddha, perfectly adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a mountain of jewels, all good. Having seen it, like a tree cut from its roots, he prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan and said: "Bhagavan, I am worthy of giving the sacred Dharma. Sugata, I am worthy of giving the sacred Dharma, Bhagavan, where do you reside?" Then, for the sake of benefiting him, the Bhagavan Samyak-sambuddha Dhvaja-raja-ishvara Buddha resided there. After the Samyak-sambuddha Dhvaja-raja-ishvara Buddha resided there, that Brahmin praised him with a hundred verses. He also offered excellent food and made aspirations to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. From that cause, the king, ministers, and people of the royal palace all developed faith. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became the Brahmin was me. Because of the merit of offering to the Samyak-sambuddha Dhvaja-raja-ishvara Buddha, I experienced boundless happiness in samsara, and now I get whatever I think and want.

All these will be accomplished. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves thus: revere the teacher, regard him as a guru, regard him as an example, make offerings to him. Having revered the teacher, regarded him as a guru, regarded him as an example, and made offerings, abide in reliance. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The so-called "Kashika garment" refers to the fact that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was revered, regarded as a guru, regarded as an example, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace retinues, merchants, navigators, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicines, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of Shravakas, he resided in the Bamboo Grove of Rajagriha. When King Bimbisara, together with countless retinues, realized the truth, in order to repay the kindness he had bestowed, to establish the custom of offering to the Buddha, to demonstrate the vastness of the household, and to cherish the appearance of the Buddha, the Blessed One, together with the monastic community of Shravakas, was invited to the royal palace retinue to receive offerings. Then, an announcement was made to the people of the Magadha royal palace retinue: When the Blessed One goes to the city, make offerings with flowers, garlands, incense, and perfumes. All the cities of Rajagriha should be cleared of stones, rubble, and broken tiles. Scatter various flowers and raise banners and flags. All the roads from the Bamboo Grove to Rajagriha should be covered with cloth.

On the ground. The ministers also all received it. Then, King Rupakaya held a hundred-spoked umbrella over the head of the Blessed One with his own hands. The other people around the palace held umbrellas for a thousand monks. Then, the Blessed One was tamed, and his retinue was also tamed; peaceful, and his retinue was also peaceful; liberated, and his retinue was also liberated; passed away, and his retinue was also passed away; purified, and his retinue was also purified; become an Arhat, and his retinue was also become an Arhat; free from desire, and his retinue was also free from desire; beautiful, and his retinue was also beautiful.
