Then, when the Blessed One's foot was placed on the threshold of the door, this great earth quaked in six ways, and when the Blessed One entered the city, such wonderful things occurred. Furthermore, like this, the narrow gates became wide. The low places became high. The elephants also made sounds. The horses also made sounds. The herds of cattle also made sounds. Various kinds of musical instruments, which were in every house, also made their own sounds. The blind were able to see. The deaf were able to hear. The mute were able to speak. Those with incomplete faculties also obtained complete faculties. The intoxicated became sober. Those who had taken poison were freed from poison. Those who were hostile to each other also obtained loving-kindness. Pregnant women also gave birth easily. Those who were bound were freed. Those who had no wealth also found wealth. The gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas dwelling in the sky also rained down showers of divine flowers. Then, the Blessed One entered the king's palace with such glory. King Bimbisara himself took a hand towel and, in the outer gatehouse, held water made of the finest sandalwood powder for washing the feet of the Blessed One and the community of monks. Then, knowing that the community of monks, including the Buddha, were seated comfortably, he offered food with a hundred flavors. After offering the food, he also offered garments from Kashi. Because of this, the people of the Magadha palace retinue became faithful. Then, the monks became doubtful and, to cut off all doubts, asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable one, by what roots of virtue did the Blessed One and the community of monks obtain such offerings, and where did the Blessed One perform these roots of virtue? The Blessed One said: Monks, the Tathagata himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and accomplished the conditions.

Therefore, like a raging torrent, those actions that are bound to happen and cannot be avoided, since I have done and accumulated them, who else will experience those actions that I have done and accumulated? Monks, actions done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. Actions, both virtuous and non-virtuous, done and accumulated, will ripen solely in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that have been taken up. The actions of sentient beings, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be lost. Once accumulated and the time is ripe, they will naturally ripen into their fruit. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Guide of those who can be trained, Unsurpassed, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Delight-Maker. He traveled from place to place and came near a certain royal palace. The king, who had been crowned from the royal lineage, heard that the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Delight-Maker had come from his travels to the vicinity of the royal palace. Having heard this, the king, possessing great wealth and power, went to where the Bhagavan, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Delight-Maker, was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Delight-Maker and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the king, who had been crowned from the royal lineage, requested the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Delight-Maker to teach him the Dharma that leads to the attainment of Bodhi. Then, the king became delighted and invited the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Delight-Maker to the royal palace, where he offered him food with a hundred flavors and presented him with invaluable garments. He also built a stupa of Nirvana, one yojana in circumference and one krosha in height. Monks, what do you think? Who was the king at that time and in that era? It was I.

I have made such offerings to the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Sugata, and therefore I have experienced boundless happiness in samsara. By that very cause, now that I have become a Tathagata, King Rupin also made such offerings. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: you should respect the teacher, you should honor him, you should revere him, you should make offerings to him. Having respected the teacher, honored him, revered him, and made offerings, you should abide in dependence. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. When the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The meaning of "Divine Food" is: Kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas all respected, honored, revered, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of shravakas, he resided in the Radiant Grove of Kalandaka in Rajagriha. At that time, there lived a merchant who was wealthy, had much wealth, enjoyed great possessions, was vast and extensive in his holdings, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, rivaled Vaishravana, and was fond of tirthikas. That venerable Maha Maudgalyayana made him have faith, brought him into the Dharma, and made him very happy with the Blessed One. That householder was also one who was inclined to great generosity. He said to the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana: I wish to make offerings to the Blessed One, please help me. The venerable Maha Maudgalyayana did not say anything to that householder and consented in silence. Then
