The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, taking that householder, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, this householder wishes to offer umbrellas to the Blessed One and the Sangha of disciples, may the Blessed One grant this out of compassion for him.' Then the Blessed One, without saying anything to the householder, granted it. Then, the householder, knowing that the Blessed One had granted it without saying anything, arranged food with a hundred flavors, flowers, incense, flower garlands, and unguents. Then the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana urged the lord of the gods, Indra, saying, 'Please help this householder.' Then the lord of the gods, Indra, transformed the grove of light into the Joyful Grove where the Kalanda birds dwell. He also brought thousands of elephants like the son of Earth Protector and the very steadfast, and these held up umbrellas with a hundred ribs over the Sangha of monks including the Buddha. He also brought thousands of goddesses like Good Heaven and others, and these fanned the Sangha of monks including the Buddha with jewel-handled yak-tail fans. He also brought thousands of gandharvas like Excellent Joy, Five-Crested Youth, and Tumburu, and these played various kinds of excellent music. He also mixed divine ambrosial food. Then, that householder, having served the Blessed One with the offerings of gods and humans, bowed his whole body at the Blessed One's feet and made the aspiration: 'By this root of virtue, generation of the mind, and the complete giving of the Dharma to be given, may I deliver sentient beings in the blind world who have no guide and no complete guide, may those who are not delivered be delivered, may those who are not liberated be liberated, may those who have not breathed be given breath, and may those who have not completely passed into nirvana completely pass into nirvana.'

May he become a fully enlightened Buddha. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the householder's progression from one cause to another, and from one action to another, smiled. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, when they smile. At that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light emanated from his mouth, some going downwards and some going upwards. Those that went downwards entered the hells of beings, such as the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Howling Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Gnashing Teeth Hell, the Kyi Hud Hell, the Ah Chuu Hell, the Hell of Splitting Like a Blue Lotus, the Hell of Splitting Like a Lotus, and the Hell of Splitting Like a Great Lotus. In those hot hells, the beings felt coolness. In those cold hells, the beings felt warmth. Thus, the various painful sensations of those beings were pacified. Then, they thought to themselves: Have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been born elsewhere? Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Blessed One emanated apparitions. Seeing the apparitions, they thought to themselves: We have not died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere. However, through the power of this unprecedented appearance of a being, our various painful sensations have been pacified. Then, they developed great joy in the apparitions, thereby exhausting the karma that would cause them to experience the hells of beings, and they would take rebirth among gods and humans in those places suitable to become vessels of truth. Those that went upwards reached the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the No-Strife, the Joyful, the Delighting in Emanation, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma retinue, the Brahma attendants, the Great Brahma, the Small Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Small Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue,

Mas and, the virtuous increases and, the cloudless ones and, the merit-born ones and, the great fruit ones and, the great people and, the human lineage and, the splendid appearances and, the extremely visible ones and, having gone to the gods of Akanishta, proclaim the sound of impermanence and, suffering and, emptiness and, selflessness. Two verses are also spoken: Strive for renunciation. Join the Buddha's teachings. Like an elephant to a reed house. Destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever in this Dharma and Discipline. Practices diligently. Having completely abandoned the cycle of birth. Will bring suffering to an end. Thus it is said. Then those rays of light circled the three thousand great thousand world realms. Following after the Blessed One himself. If the Blessed One wishes to prophesy past deeds, then they will not appear on the Blessed One's back. If he wishes to prophesy future deeds, then they will not appear in front. If he wishes to prophesy that beings will be born in hell, then they will not appear on the soles of his feet. If he wishes to prophesy that they will be born as animals, then they will not appear on the heels of his feet. If he wishes to prophesy that they will be born as hungry ghosts, then they will not appear on the thumbs of his feet. If he wishes to prophesy that they will be born as humans, then they will not appear on his two knees. If he wishes to prophesy a wheel-turning king of strength, then they will not appear on the palm of his left hand. If he wishes to prophesy a wheel-turning king, then they will not appear on the palm of his right hand. If he wishes to prophesy that they will be born as gods, then they will not appear on his navel. If he wishes to prophesy the Bodhi of a Hearer, then they will not appear on his face. If he wishes to prophesy the Bodhi of a Solitary Buddha, then they will not appear on the hair between his eyebrows. If he wishes to prophesy the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Bodhi, then they will not appear on the crown of his head. Then those rays of light circumambulated the Blessed One three times and entered the crown of the Blessed One's head.
