Having it built, with fences, horse ramps, windows, and all the doors properly installed, adorned with cornices, crescent moons, and railings, equipped with cushions, filled everywhere with ponds, and surrounded by many trees laden with flowers and fruits. Having done this, he offered it to the Blessed One together with the assembly of monastic disciples. Then, he requested the Blessed One to perform great miracles. Then, the king, having requested, said: "Blessed One, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Subduer of Sovereignty, please display the great miracle of the Buddha's Majestic Play." Therefore, the king, ministers, townspeople, villagers, and all the people of the palace retinue were delighted and cherished the protection of the teachings. Monks, what do you think? Whoever was the king at that time, at that moment, was me. Because of the ripening of the karma of making such offerings to the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Subduer of Sovereignty, I experienced infinite happiness in samsara, and now that I have become a Tathagata, my teachings have also become beautiful. Monks, therefore, you should train like this: respect the teacher, honor the guru, revere, and make offerings. Having respected the teacher, honored the guru, revered, and made offerings, abide in reliance, monks, you should train like this. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The fifth chapter is named: Kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas revered, honored, respected, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who is offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, is of great merit.

The venerable ones, endowed with robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal supplies, along with the monastic community of Śrāvakas, resided and dwelt in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary, in Rājagṛha. At the time when the foolish man Devadatta caused thousands of harms to the teachings of the Blessed One, yet could not even move a hair of the Blessed One, he said to King Ajātaśatru: Great King, from Rājagṛha let no one go to the Śramaṇa Gautama, nor give food, establish such a law! Even if he does so, he will not gain profit, nor gain respect, and if he is not eaten by demons, he will move to another country. Then the king did so. Then, the lay followers who dwelt seeing the truth wept, saying: Alas! The appearance of the Buddha, the Blessed One, is as rare as the Udumbara flower, and even though we have met him, we have not been able to serve him, therefore, the people of the city of Rājagṛha have become without a protector. The monks heard those words. Then, the venerable Ānanda, as he had heard, reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Ānanda, here, the Tathāgata knows the time, do not be discouraged. Furthermore, as long as my teachings exist, the requisites of the Śrāvakas will not be lacking, let alone now? At that time, the lord of the gods, Indra, arose with the knowledge of seeing the lower realms, and seeing that the teachings of the Blessed One had become like that, in the moment of seeing, in order to generate joy in the patrons and donors, and to truly show the greatness of the Buddha's appearance, and to cut off the arrogance and pride of King Ajātaśatru and Devadatta, and to show his own faith, he illuminated the entire city of Rājagṛha with great light, and uttered a great voice, saying: From now on, I will serve the Blessed One and the monastic community of Śrāvakas with heavenly robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal supplies. Having said this, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived,

Having bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, he sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: 'For as long as I live, in this city of Rajagriha, I wish to attend to the Blessed One and the community of disciples with divine garments, food, bedding, seats, medicines for the sick, and medical supplies. May the Blessed One grant this to me.' The Blessed One said: 'Kauśika, there are many in the world who desire merit, and it is enough that they have faith in me in this way.' Indra said: 'If so, for the sake of the Thus-Gone One, I wish to hold a festival every five years for five years. May the Blessed One grant this to me.' The Blessed One said: 'Kauśika, there are many in the world who desire merit, and it is enough that they have faith in me in this way.' Indra said: 'If so, may the Blessed One grant this to me for five years.' Then, the Blessed One, in order to manifest the power of his own merit, to benefit the Lord of the Gods, Indra, and to ensure that the five-day festival would not be interrupted in the future, granted it by remaining silent. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, knowing that the Blessed One had granted it by remaining silent, showed the grove of light as if it were a palace that was completely victorious, and also showed the divine seats, the divine ponds, and the divine ambrosial food. Then, the Blessed One sat down on the prepared seat. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, knowing that the Buddha and the community of monks were sitting comfortably, served them with his own hands, attended by hundreds of thousands of gods, satisfying them and offering them whatever they desired. Having satisfied them and offered them whatever they desired in various ways with his own hands, knowing that the Blessed One had finished his meal, the bowl had been taken away, and his hands had been washed, he took the lowest seat and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One with the Lord of the Gods, Indra, and his retinue
