and, the Asuras, and the Garudas, and the Kinnaras, and the Mahoragas revered him. They made him their teacher. They drew pictures and made offerings. The gods, and the nagas, and the yakshas, and the asuras, and the garudas, and the kinnaras, and the mahoragas worshipped and knew the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who possessed great merit, and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicine supplies. Together with the Shravaka Sangha, he was residing in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a merchant who was rich and had much wealth, great enjoyment, and a vast and spacious estate, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played and rejoiced, and was happy and delighted. Although he played and rejoiced, and was happy and delighted, he had neither a son nor a daughter. Then he clasped his hands together and thought: Although I have countless possessions, I have neither a son nor a daughter. After I die, because I have no son, all my possessions will be seized by the king. He was depressed in his heart. Then, the shramanas, and the brahmins, and the diviners, and the friends, and the relatives, and other kinsmen advised him: You should pray to the gods. There is also a saying in the world that praying can produce sons and daughters, but that is not the case. If praying could produce sons and daughters, then like a Chakravartin king, each person would have a thousand sons. In reality, sons and daughters are born from the aggregation of three conditions. What are the three? The parents both have strong desire and engage in intercourse, the mother is in her fertile period and has menstruation, and a gandharva comes. Sons and daughters are born from the aggregation of these three conditions. However, the shramanas, and the brahmins, and the diviners, and the friends, and the relatives, and the kinsmen kept urging him, because he had no son and desired to have one.

After that, they pray to Gulang, the water god, Kubera, Indra, Brahma, and other gods. For example, they pray to the guardian deity of the monastery, the forest deity, the deity of the crossroads, the deity of the three-way intersection, the deity who receives the torma, the co-born deity, those who are in accordance with the Dharma, and the deities who always follow behind. They are also devoted to praying. A sentient being dies and transmigrates from one class of sentient beings and enters the womb of that wife. Some women with wise nature have five uncommon qualities. What are the five? That is, knowing whether a man is conceived or not, knowing the season and menstruation, knowing conception and from what it is conceived, knowing whether it is a boy or a girl. If it is a boy, it dwells on the right side of the abdomen. If it is a girl, it dwells on the left side of the abdomen. Then, she happily tells her family: 'Master, I am pregnant, and because it dwells on the right side of my abdomen, it must be a boy, please be happy!' She is also very happy, raises her upper body, stretches out her right hand and says: 'I will see the face of the son I have longed for for a long time. My son must be capable! Do not be incompetent! He must be able to do my work! He must support me to repay the kindness of raising me! He must be able to enjoy my property! May my family lineage last long! After we die, also for us, no matter how much or how little, give alms and do good deeds, and wherever we are reborn, may these merits reach there!' She says happy words. When she knows that she is pregnant, in order to nurture the child, she is placed on top of a high building, and when it is cold, cold utensils are provided, and when it is hot, cooling utensils are provided, as well as the food recommended by the doctor, not too bitter, not too sour, not too salty, not too sweet, not too spicy.

I, consuming foods that are not too astringent, namely snow and sour, salty, sweet, spicy, and non-astringent foods, covering the body with necklaces and silks, wandering from throne to throne and from small seat to small seat as if a celestial maiden were playing in a delightful garden, not descending to the ground below, and not hearing any unpleasant sounds. When she was eight or nine months along, she gave birth to a son, a boy who was handsome, pleasing to the eye, and beautiful. When he was born, all the people in the household rejoiced and held a celebration for his birth. They began to name the boy, and the relatives said, "When this child was born, all the people in the household rejoiced, therefore, let us name this boy 'Joyful.'" So, they named him "Joyful." After that, he was entrusted to eight nurses, namely two nurses who nurtured Joyful in their laps, two nurses who nursed him, two nurses who cleaned his dirt, and two nurses who amused him. These eight nurses raised him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of ghee, and other various excellent items, and he grew rapidly like a lotus in a lake. After that, when he grew up to be five or six years old, he became an extremely lazy person, unwilling even to rise from his bed and cushions. He was sharp-witted and clear-minded, and he studied the scriptures while staying at home. After that, the merchant thought to himself, "I pleased the gods and gave birth to a son once in a hundred times, and this son has become an extremely lazy person, unwilling even to rise from his bed and cushions, sitting all day like a cripple. What use is such a son?" The merchant also enjoyed pleasure, so he invited six non-Buddhist teachers to his home, thinking, "If this boy sees them, perhaps he will be inspired and at least rise from his bed." After that, the lazy boy saw those teachers and did not even look at them, let alone get up.
