The guardian spirit of the monastery thought to himself: 'This householder, Anathapindika, is not a frivolous person. He is a steadfast being, so there must be a reason for what he is doing.' With this thought, the guardian spirit became doubtful and asked the person who favored the heretics: 'For whom are you building this?' That person replied: 'I am building this for the Blessed One, the son of Craving.' Anathapindika said: 'I am building this for the Blessed One, the Buddha.' The guardian spirit of Jeta Grove said: 'Who is this Buddha?' Then Anathapindika explained the qualities of the Buddha in detail to him. Then the guardian spirit of Jeta Grove said to Anathapindika: 'Householder, I myself will make offerings to that Blessed One.' Then the householder Anathapindika led the guardian spirit of Jeta Grove to where the Blessed One was. The guardian spirit of Jeta Grove saw that the Blessed One's body was perfectly adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, and was beautiful like a moving mountain of jewels. As soon as he saw this, the guardian spirit of Jeta Grove threw the lotus flower at the Blessed One. As soon as it was thrown, the lotus flower immediately became as large as a chariot wheel and remained above the Blessed One. Then, when the guardian spirit of Jeta Grove saw this miracle, he prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One like a tree being uprooted, folded his palms, and with joy in his heart, made the following aspiration: 'By this root of virtue, the arising of bodhicitta, and the complete giving of the Dharma of generosity, may I become a Buddha who leads the blind world without a guide or leader, who liberates beings who have not been liberated, who releases those who have not been released, who gives breath to those who have not breathed, and who causes those who have not attained complete nirvana to attain complete nirvana.' Then the Blessed One, knowing the cause and effect of the guardian spirit of Jeta Grove, and the continuation of karma, smiled. This is

When the Buddhas, the Bhagavats, smile, it is their nature that blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light emanate from their mouths. Some go downwards, and some go upwards. Those that go downwards reach the sentient being hells, including the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Crying Hell, the Great Crying Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blistering Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the So-tam-tam Hell, the Kyi-hud-zer Hell, the A-chu-zer Hell, the hells that crack open like utpalas, the hells that crack open like lotuses, and those that become like great lotuses cracking open. In those hot sentient being hells, they become cool and descend. In all those cold sentient being hells, they become warm and descend. Thus, the specific sufferings of those sentient beings are pacified. Then, they think, 'Alas, have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been born elsewhere?' Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Bhagavat emanates a manifestation. Having seen the manifestation, they think, 'Alas, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere. However, through the power of this unprecedented appearance of a sentient being, our specific sufferings have been pacified.' Then, they become exceedingly delighted with the manifestation, and thus, the karma of experiencing the sentient being hells is exhausted, and they take rebirth among gods and humans, in places where they are fit to be vessels of truth. Those that go upwards are the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma retinue, the Brahma's Attendants, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Extensive Virtue, the Cloudless, the Merit-born, the Great Fruit, the Non-Great, the Non-Afflicted, the Clearly Seen, the Supremely Seen.
