Rata: From where did he die and transmigrate, where was he born, and by what karma was he born? Then, having died and transmigrated from a venomous snake, he was born in the beautiful heavenly realm of the Thirty-three (Trayastriṃśa). He saw that the Bhagavan was delighted in his heart. Then, the son of the gods who had previously been a venomous snake thought to himself: It is not my place to go to see the Bhagavan only after I have leisure. I will go to see the Bhagavan before I have leisure. Then, the son of the gods who had previously been a venomous snake, wearing moving, beautiful earrings, his body adorned with necklaces and belts, wearing a crown adorned with various jewels, his body anointed with saffron, bay leaves, and camphor, etc., on that very night, filled containers with heavenly utpala flowers, lotuses, kumuda lilies, white lotuses, and mandara flowers, and illuminated all the places where the kalaviṅka birds dwelled in the grove of light with great light. He scattered flowers upon the Bhagavan and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan, having understood the thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature of the son of the gods who had previously been a venomous snake, taught him the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the Four Noble Truths. Having heard this, the son of the gods who had previously been a venomous snake, having shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, attained the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he spoke words of joy: Venerable Bhagavan, you have dried up my ocean of blood and tears, transcended the mountain of bones, closed the doors of the lower realms, opened the doors of heaven and liberation, and placed me among gods and humans. Such great kindness was not done for me by my father, nor by my mother, nor by the king, nor by the gods, nor by the assembly of family and relatives, nor by former companions, nor by śrāmaṇas and brahmins! Again he said: The path of the lower realms, full of many faults, extremely unbearable, you have cut off by your power; you have opened the path to the heavenly realm, full of merit; you have also opened the path to nirvana for me.

Gaining the Ground. Today, I have obtained the extremely pure eye that has abandoned faults, relying on you. I have crossed to the other shore of the ocean of suffering, and have obtained the peaceful state that pleases the noble ones. The lord of men, worshipped by men and gods, who has abandoned the diseases of birth, aging, and death, by whom it is difficult to see the emptiness of existence, you, the capable one, are the fruit seen today. Then, the one holding the necklace became joyful, bowed down and prostrated to the two feet, and also circumambulated the one who overcomes enemies. Facing the world of gods, he went to the heavenly realm. Then, that son of the gods who had previously become a venomous snake, just as a merchant makes a profit, a farmer has a bountiful harvest, a hero wins a battle, and a sick person is freed from all diseases, with the wealth that came to the Blessed One, on that very night, he went to the abode of King Rupakaya-citta (Form-bodied Heart), illuminating all the king's palaces with great light, awakening the king and saying: Great king, what are you doing sleeping so much? Then the king awoke and saw that great light and that son of the gods. Having seen him, he was also happy and delighted, and asked: Who are you? He replied: I am the one who, in that pleasure grove, after the Blessed One subdued the venomous snake, died and was born in the excellent heavenly realm of the Thirty-three. I also served the Blessed One and thus saw the truth. Now I will show you, go and dig up a great treasure from a certain direction of that pleasure grove, and for my sake, offer food to the Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers, and also please recite the lineage of merit. Then, King Rupakaya-citta did not say anything to the son of the gods, but agreed. Then, the son of the gods who had previously become a venomous snake, knowing that the king had agreed without speaking, disappeared right there. Then, King Rupakaya-citta, on that very night, commanded the court attendants and people of the country of Magadha, went to that pleasure grove and dug up the treasure, and offered food to the Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers for three months, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, formerly a snake
