As soon as he spoke those words, his hair and beard were shaved off, as if they had been shaved for seven days. His conduct became like that of one who had taken full ordination, appearing like a hundred-year-old. In his hand, he held a begging bowl and a water pot. Here it is said: When the Thus-Gone One (Sanskrit: Tathāgata, Devanagari: तथागत) said, "Come here," his head was shaved, and he wore monastic robes on his body. The Buddha bestowed clothes upon him with his intention, and in an instant, his senses became very peaceful. Then, the Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Devanagari: भगवान्) gave him a prophecy of mindful attention. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he recognized that this wheel of the five-eyed cycle of existence was unstable and wavering, and he determined that all compounded phenomena are of the nature of decay, decline, dissolution, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from desire in the three realms, was equal to gold and dung, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of his hand, became cool like sandalwood soaked in water, broke the shell of ignorance with wisdom, obtained knowledge, supernormal powers, and discriminating awareness, turned his back on the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and became an object of worship, remembrance, respect, and discussion by the gods and their retinues. Even though he had already attained the state of an Arhat, he still delighted in evil. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, like this, my monk "Outer Earth Hole" is the foremost among my Shravaka disciples who are fond of evil. Then, the monks arose with doubt. To cut off all doubt, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Sir, what deeds did the Elder "Outer Earth Hole" do that he experiences such suffering? The Blessed One said: Monks, "Outer Earth Hole" himself, in other past lives, accumulated collections, possessed the conditions for accomplishment, came like a flood, and did and accumulated those deeds that would not come to nothing. Therefore, who else would experience the deeds done and accumulated by "Outer Earth Hole" himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated are not of the outer earth.
