In order to listen to the Dharma, they sat before the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One also taught them the Dharma that was appropriate to them. Having heard it, they were delighted and departed. At that time, those monks who did not sleep at night and at dawn, who diligently practiced, and who dwelt in diligence, saw a great light appear in the presence of the Blessed One. Having seen it, they were in doubt and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is this? Last night, was it the ruler of the Saha world, Brahma, or the lord of the gods, Indra? Or did the Four Great Kings come to see the Blessed One? The Blessed One replied: Monks, it was not the ruler of the Saha world, nor the lord of the gods, Indra, nor the Four Great Kings who came to see me. But that hungry ghost, having died, was born as a hungry ghost with great magical powers. Last night, he came to me, and I taught him the Dharma, and he was delighted and departed. Monks, therefore, you must strive to abandon stinginess, so that the fault of that merchant who was reborn as a hungry ghost does not occur. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, those monks, as well as the gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and other beings, rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The one called "Son" is the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is honored, respected, revered, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who is offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, is endowed with great merit, and has obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. He dwells with the monastic community of hearers in the Radiant Grove of Kalanda in Rajagriha.

Near the Vulture Peak Mountain, he saw a female preta, like Yama's sister, her body soaked in blood, living in a cemetery, surrounded by skeletons, giving birth to five children day and night, experiencing such suffering. Although she had love for her children, she was threatened by hunger and ate them. Then, the elder Lotus Gift's son asked her: What kind of past deeds have you done that you are experiencing such suffering? The female preta said: When the sun rises, there is no need for a lamp. Please report this matter to the Blessed One, and he will prophesy to you the nature of my karma, and hearing this, other sentient beings will also abandon sinful deeds. Then, the venerable Lotus Gift's son went to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One arose from deep meditation and taught the fourfold assembly everything that had the taste of Dharma, like unboiled honey. Countless retinues also listened to everything that had the taste of Dharma from the Blessed One without moving their senses. Then, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, speak frankly, speak pleasantly, say "Come, welcome," and always smile first. There, the Blessed One said to the venerable Lotus Gift's son: Lotus Gift's son, come, welcome. Where have you come from now? Lotus Gift's son replied: Venerable Blessed One, I have come from among the pretas.
