Then he went for alms. After begging for alms in Shravasti, he ate his meal, abandoned the practice of cleaning up afterwards, and leaving his bowl and Dharma robes, he went wandering in the land of the pretas. The venerable Nanda saw a female preta, like a burnt tree stump, blind, covering herself with her own hair, her belly as big as a mountain, her mouth as small as the eye of a needle, smelling foul like a charnel ground, surrounded by crows, vultures, dogs, and foxes, who were tearing and eating her flesh from all directions. She was moaning in pain, uttering a faint sound, experiencing intense, unbearable suffering, heat, and unpleasantness. Then, the venerable Nanda became displeased and asked: Sister, what evil deeds did you do in the past that you are now experiencing such suffering? The female preta said: When the sun rises, there is no need for a lamp. Please ask the Blessed One about this matter, and he will tell you about the nature of my karma, so that other sentient beings, hearing it, will also abandon evil deeds. Then, the venerable Nanda went to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One had arisen from meditative absorption and was teaching the fourfold assembly, showing them all the Dharma that was like unboiled honey, and hundreds of thousands of attendants were listening to the Dharma with unwavering senses. Then, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, always speak openly, speak sweetly, say "Come, welcome you," and always smile first. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Nanda: Nanda, welcome, you have come well. Where have you come from now? Nanda replied: Venerable, I have come from wandering among the pretas. There, I saw a female preta, like a burnt tree stump, blind, covering herself with her own hair, her belly as big as a mountain, her mouth as small as the eye of a needle, smelling foul like a charnel ground, surrounded by crows, vultures, dogs, and foxes, who were tearing and eating her flesh from all directions.

and unpleasant feelings, I saw such a being. Again, he reported: "The body is huge like a high mountain, the mouth and throat are dry and extremely ugly. His own hair covers his entire face. The mouth is as thin as a needle's eye, extremely emaciated. Thus, naked and with hair covering his face, he is like a machine of bones standing upright. Holding a skull, he is disgusting, crying and running around everywhere. Exhausted by hunger and thirst, afflicted by suffering, he utters a weak voice, experiencing painful feelings. What terrible sins did she commit in the human world that she has to suffer such terrible pain?" The Blessed One said: "The female hungry ghost named Joyful is one who commits sinful deeds. Do you want to hear about the ripening of her karma?" Venerable ones, please listen. Joyful one, then listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Joyful one, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate aeon, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Beings, Unequalled, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. He resided and dwelt in the Deer Park where the hermits spoke in the city of Varanasi. Then, in that city of Varanasi, there was a merchant's daughter who desired the Dharma. Having heard the Dharma, she regarded samsara as a fault and nirvana as a virtue. Having asked her parents, she went forth into the teachings of the Blessed One. Then, for her sake, her relatives built a nunnery. She lived there together with the nuns who were learning and not learning, but after a while, due to carelessness, she relaxed the basis of her training. Then the nuns expelled her for violating the precepts. Then she also cut off the offerings that the patrons and householders would necessarily make out of faith, and the praises of the nuns who were learning and not learning.

It should also be narrated. Those monks who are endowed with morality, even when they see them, they close their eyes and sit. How do you think, Delightful One? That merchant's daughter is this hungry ghost woman. Because she was stingy towards the monastery, she was born as a hungry ghost. Because she did not give alms of porridge, she was surrounded by crows, vultures, dogs, and foxes. Because she spoke disapprovingly of the nuns who were learners and non-learners, her body became foul-smelling. Because she closed her eyes when she saw the monks endowed with morality, she became blind. Delightful One, thus, actions that are definitely dark will definitely have a dark ripening. Actions that are definitely white will definitely have a white ripening. Actions that lead will also have a leading ripening. Delightful One, therefore, abandon actions that are definitely dark and those that lead, and focus solely on actions that are definitely white. Delightful One, you should train in this way. When this Dharma discourse was taught, millions of beings saw the truth. Then, the Bhagavan addressed the monks, "Monks, having understood the faults of stinginess and verbal misconduct, and other faults as well, strive to abandon stinginess and verbal misconduct. Monks, you should train in this way." After the Bhagavan had spoken, those monks, as well as gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and other beings, rejoiced and praised what the Bhagavan had said. The term "merchant" refers to the fact that the Buddha Bhagavan was honored, respected, revered, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. Gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, etc.
