I. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is worshipped and known by (sky-goers, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers), endowed with great merit, possessing robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal supplies, together with the community of Shravakas, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in the garden of Prince Jeta. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a merchant who was wealthy, had much wealth and great enjoyment, had vast and extensive possessions, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. Then one day, he went to the garden of Prince Jeta. Then he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was perfectly adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, and all good like a moving mountain of jewels. Having seen him, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. The Bhagavan taught him the Dharma that would cause him to become weary of samsara. Having heard it, he developed a negative view of samsara and a positive view of nirvana. He renounced in the Bhagavan's teachings and became famous and endowed with great merit, and obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal supplies. He accumulated all the possessions he had obtained, and did not share them with those who practiced the same Brahma-conduct. Then, constantly relying on and meditating on stinginess, and increasing it, he died while particularly attached to his possessions, and was born as a hungry ghost in his own dwelling. Then, those who practiced the same Brahma-conduct with him struck the tailless Gandi and took out the bones. Then, they made an offering of bones to his bones, and then returned to the temple. Then, they opened the door of the dwelling and began to take turns borrowing the robes and bowls, and after a while, that hungry ghost, with ugly hands and feet and eyes, and an extremely terrifying body, stood there holding the robes and bowls.

That place was seen. Having seen such an unpleasant place, the monks became unhappy and reported to the Blessed One. Then, in order to benefit that son of a lineage, to cause the assembly of disciples to generate aversion, and to truly show the ripening of miserliness, the Blessed One, attended by the assembly of monks, led by the monastic community of monks, went to that place. Then, he saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, whose body was well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a moving mountain of jewels, perfectly good in every way. As soon as he saw him, he developed joy in his mind towards the Blessed One and became ashamed. Then, the Blessed One, with a voice as deep as the thunder of rain clouds and like the sound of a drum, scolded that hungry ghost, saying: "Good-looking one, you have taken up this Dharma robe and begging bowl for the sake of your own destruction, and therefore you have been born as a hungry ghost." Now, please generate joy in your mind towards me, and do not be attached to these possessions, and that will be excellent. After dying from this, you will be born in the hells of sentient beings. Then, that hungry ghost offered the Dharma robe and begging bowl to the monastic community, prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, and confessed his offenses. Then, the Blessed One spoke the lineage of merit for the sake of that hungry ghost: "Whatever merit from this giving, may that hungry ghost follow it. From the world of hungry ghosts, which is greatly feared, may he quickly be liberated." Then, that hungry ghost developed joy in his mind towards the Blessed One, and after dying, was born as a hungry ghost with great magical powers. Then, that hungry ghost with great magical powers, with earrings moving and sparkling, his body adorned with necklaces and garlands, possessing a headdress adorned with various jewels, his body smeared with saffron, tamala leaves, and kala and other fragrances, on that very night, filled containers with heavenly utpala flowers, lotuses, kumuda flowers, white lotuses, and mandara flowers, illuminating the garden of light, the place where the kalanda birds dwell, the entire surrounding area with great light. Then, he scattered flowers upon the Blessed One, and the Dharma...
