Having ascertained that he possessed the Dharma of... Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become detached from the desires of the three realms, regarding gold and rubble as equal, possessing a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, cooled like sandalwood soaked in water, having shattered the eggshell with wisdom, having attained wisdom, supernormal knowledge, and individual correct knowledge, not looking to worldly gain, attachment, and respect, having become an object of worship, reverence, and respect by the gods (including the powerful and attendant deities). He then built a leaf hut on the bank of the Ganges River and meditated. His mother, who had been born into the realm of pretas (hungry ghosts), was naked like a burning tree stump, covering herself with her own hair. Her belly was as big as a mountain, but her mouth was as small as the eye of a needle. Burning, intensely burning, completely burning, the flames blazed fiercely. She emitted a burning and distressed sound. The Venerable Water-End went in her direction, and after a while, Water-End saw that preta woman and asked: Who are you, looking exactly like this (preta)? The preta woman said: O only son, From where were you born? I am your loving mother! Separated from food and drink, born among the pretas. From the time I died until now, twenty-five years have passed. I have not even tasted the flavor of water, let alone food. The trees laden with fruit, when I go to their base, those trees become fruitless. Even if I go to the shore of a full lake, those lakes also dry up. It is pleasant under the tree of the monks, and the water in your bowl is cool. Have compassion on me, who am starving! Tormented by thirst, please give me water! Then, Water-End said to his mother: Mother, when you were reborn as a human, did I not have you give alms and perform virtuous deeds? The preta woman said: O only son, I was oppressed by miserliness, and I did not give alms, nor did I perform virtuous deeds. All the wealth I obtained, I buried in a pit with a sinful mind. O only son, therefore, ask those who have faith to offer food to the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, for my sake, and request them to recite the dedication prayer. Perhaps I may be liberated from the birth place of pretas.
