There was a person who lived by lying down, and he was sick. He went to Varanasi for alms. After some time, the doctor prescribed suitable food for him, so he went to a place where there was a merchant. When the merchant saw him, he asked, "Venerable, what do you want?" He said, "I want suitable food." Then the merchant instructed his wife, "Offer suitable food to the venerable." Then his wife became stingy, thinking, "If I give him food today, he will come again tomorrow." So she went to one side, filled the bowl with pus, covered it with rice, and offered it to the Pratyekabuddha. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not use their knowledge of others' minds until they are told, so he accepted it. After accepting it, he felt it and thought, "This smells bad, it seems she filled it with pus." Then the great being threw it away somewhere and left. The Blessed One said, "Maudgalyāyana, what do you think? At that time, the one who was the merchant's wife was this female ghost. After she did such a sinful deed, from then on, she was always born in hells, animals, and pretas, and always ate pus as food. Maudgalyāyana, therefore, one should strive to abandon stinginess, so that one does not suffer such a fault as that female ghost. Maudgalyāyana, you should learn in this way." After the Blessed One said this, the venerable Maudgalyāyana and the gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and other beings rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. The so-called Maudgalyāyana means that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored, respected, revered, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who is worshipped and known by gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed of great merit, having obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for illness, and medicinal supplies, resided and dwelt in the bamboo grove Kalandaka, the feeding place of birds, in Rajagriha, together with a community of monastic disciples. At that time, on the other side of Rajagriha, on this side of the bamboo grove, in the space between, there was a female preta, resembling a burnt tree stump, dwelling naked and covering herself with her own hair. Her belly was as large as a mountain, but her mouth was as small as the eye of a needle. She was burning, intensely burning, completely burning, with flames blazing in a single mass, uttering sounds of burning and distress, experiencing feelings of intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant sensations. Five hundred crows circled in the sky like vultures, unable to find a place to land anywhere. Then, the venerable Maudgalyayana, having dressed in his lower and upper robes in the morning, took his alms bowl and went to Rajagriha for alms, and he saw those pretas. Those pretas also saw the great venerable Maudgalyayana. Then, they gathered together and went to the great venerable Maudgalyayana, saying, "Have mercy, have mercy," uttering sounds of suffering, speaking indistinctly and incoherently. "Venerable Maudgalyayana, we were five hundred merchants in Rajagriha. We were miserly and greedy, always clinging to possessions. We ourselves did not give alms, and we also obstructed others from giving alms. To those who were worthy of giving, we also reviled them with words like those of pretas, saying, 'You are born like a preta, peeking into the houses of others.' Therefore, after our death, we were born as such pretas. Venerable great Maudgalyayana, therefore, please inform our relatives who live in Rajagriha of our actions, inquire about their faith, and after offering food to the monastic community of monks, including the Buddha, please have them recite a dedication of merit for our sake. However, the birthplace of us pretas

"It is also possible to be liberated from that." After speaking, the Venerable Maudgalyāyana, without saying anything to the pretas, agreed. Then, the Venerable Maudgalyāyana inquired about faith in the homes of those pretas' relatives, and the next day invited the Buddha and the monastic community of monks for a meal. He also informed the pretas, "The Blessed One is invited for a meal with the monastic community of monks, you should also come there." He also said to those relatives, "You should also come, and there you will see those pretas in the feast of the relatives' offering." Then, the Venerable Maudgalyāyana himself participated in the preparation of the offering feast. Then, after dawn, the food was arranged, but when the shadow of the sun reached a certain point, those pretas were not visible. Then, the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana, with his divine eye, thought of those pretas, but they were not visible even in the vicinity of Magadha. Finally, he looked between the four continents, but they were not visible there either. Then, as far as his wisdom could see, he looked, but they were not visible there either. Then, the Venerable Great Maudgalyāyana became unhappy and said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, my patrons are not here." The Blessed One said, "Maudgalyāyana, let it go, do not be unhappy. There are immeasurable realms of the world that transcend the realm of all Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Although they are blown there by the wind of karma, nevertheless, Maudgalyāyana, now look at the power of the Tathāgata! The vision of omniscient wisdom will be manifested. The magical transformation of the Tathāgata will also be shown, strike the gaṇḍī!" Then, when the gaṇḍī was struck, all the monastic community of monks gathered. The relatives of the pretas and other beings who wished to see the pretas also came to watch and gathered. Then, the Blessed One, in order that the pretas might see the Buddha, the Blessed One, together with the monastic community of Śrāvakas, being offered a meal, and that the relatives were offering a meal to the monastic community of monks, including the Buddha, for our sake,
