Saying, "Come, welcome," there was a smile before. There, the Blessed One said to the venerable great Maudgalyayana: Maudgalyayana, come! Welcome! Where have you come from just now? Maudgalyayana replied: Venerable, I have come back from wandering in the realm of pretas. There, I saw a female preta whose belly was as big as a mountain, but whose mouth was as small as the eye of a needle, her own hair covering her body, naked, uttering a pitiful sound, experiencing intense suffering, unbearable suffering, heat, and unpleasant feelings. Again, he replied: Her great body is like a high mountain, her lips and throat are dry and extremely ugly, her own hair covers her face, she is naked, her mouth is thin like the eye of a needle, and she is very thin. Like that, naked, with her hair covering her body, like erecting a wheel of bones, holding a skull, unbearable, crying and running everywhere. Exhausted by hunger and thirst, afflicted by suffering, she utters a pitiful sound, experiencing the feeling of suffering. What terrible sins did she commit in the human world that she is experiencing such terrible suffering? The Blessed One said: Maudgalyayana, that female preta is doing sinful deeds. Do you want to hear about her actions? Venerable, I want to hear. Maudgalyayana, then listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Maudgalyayana, in the past, in this good kalpa, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, complete in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed charioteer of beings to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Blessed One, named Kashyapa appeared in the world. He resided and dwelt in the Deer Park where the hermits spoke in the city of Varanasi. Then, in that city of Varanasi, there was a householder's wife who was miserly, stingy, and always held on to her possessions, not even giving alms to crows, let alone beggars.

Needless to say about others, if she saw practitioners, Brahmins, the poor and destitute, and the hungry, she would hate them in her heart. Once, a beggar came to her house, and when she saw him, she became miserly and her heart turned to hatred, thinking: If I respect this person, he will come again in the future. Then, that sinful person disregarded the ugly consequences of the next life, called that Bhikshu into the house, closed the door, and made him starve. She also scolded him loudly, saying: Bhikshu, this is the disrespect you receive, do not come to my house again in the future. Then, because she always practiced and cultivated miserliness, and increased it, she was reborn as a hungry ghost after death, experiencing such suffering. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, in order to avoid the same faults as that hungry ghost woman, one should strive to abandon miserliness. After the Blessed One gave this teaching, the venerable son of Maudgalyayana, as well as gods, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and others, were delighted and praised the words of the Blessed One. The so-called "water" refers to the fact that kings, ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, and captains, as well as gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, all respected, revered, esteemed, and offered to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who is offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possesses great merit and has obtained the requisites of clothing, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies. Together with the Sangha of Hearers, he dwells and resides in the Kalanda bird grove in the radiant garden of Rajagriha. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana traveled in the realm of hungry ghosts and saw a hungry ghost woman whose body was like a burning tree stump.

Like a tree stump, with her own hair entangled, her belly as big as a mountain, and her mouth as small as the eye of a needle. Burning, intensely burning, everywhere burning, the flames burning together, emitting sounds of burning and suffering, tormented by thirst. Experiencing intense, unbearable, scorching, and unpleasant feelings, and merely by her sight, rivers and wells would dry up, and when it rained. What was seen was a rain of embers with sparks flying above her. Having seen this, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to her: Alas, what sins have you committed that you are experiencing such suffering? The female preta said: Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, I am a doer of sins. Please report this matter to the Buddha Bhagavan, and he will show you the form of my karma. Having heard this, other beings will also abandon sinful deeds. After that, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where the Bhagavan was. At that time, the Bhagavan arose from inner samadhi. He was teaching the fourfold assembly the taste of the Dharma, like unboiled honey from bees. Countless hundreds of thousands of retinues also remained motionless in their senses. They were listening to everything with the taste of Dharma from the Bhagavan. Then, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, speak frankly, speak pleasantly, come! Welcome! Saying this, before was a smile. There, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: Maudgalyāyana, come! Welcome to you! Where have you come from now? Maudgalyāyana reported: Venerable, I have come back from wandering among the pretas. There, I saw a female preta, like a tree stump, with her own hair entangled. Her belly as big as a mountain, and her mouth as small as the eye of a needle. Burning, intensely burning, everywhere burning, the flames burning together.
