Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves thus: you should dwell with virtuous spiritual friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports, and you should not dwell with evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports. Monks, you should train yourselves thus. Then, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: Venerable One, when I was dwelling alone in seclusion here, and I entered into correct inner placement, such a mental proliferation arose in my mind, namely: virtuous spiritual friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are half of the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya,梵行,pure conduct), while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not so. The Blessed One said: Ānanda, do not say thus, that virtuous spiritual friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are half of the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya,梵行,pure conduct), while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not so. Why is that? Ānanda, virtuous spiritual friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are the whole, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, and completely purified ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya,梵行,pure conduct), while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not so. Why is that? Ānanda, by relying on virtuous spiritual friends, sentient beings who are subject to birth will be completely liberated from the nature of birth, and sentient beings who are subject to aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil will be completely liberated from the nature of birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil. Ānanda, therefore, by this aspect alone, you should understand thus: virtuous spiritual friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are the whole, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, and completely purified ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya,梵行,pure conduct).

"Evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and the basis of evil are not like that." Venerable Ananda, you should learn in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The fourth verse of the summary from the Hundred Parables is completed, thus ending the Jataka tales of the Bodhisattva. Fifth Verse of the Summary. The summary is: The place for pressing sugarcane and food, as well as water and the utensils for the outer toilet, Maudgalyayana's son and the end of the water, the blind man and that merchant, the sons and the outer toilet pit, have been taught in the categories. The place for pressing sugarcane means: The kings and, the great ministers and, the wealthy people and, the people of the palace retinue and, the merchants and, the captains and, the gods and, the nagas and, the yakshas and, the asuras and, the garudas and, the kinnaras and, the mahoragas, revered the Buddha, the Blessed One, respected him, regarded him as their teacher, depicted his image, made offerings, the gods and, the nagas and, the yakshas and, the asuras and, the garudas and, the kinnaras and, the mahoragas, offered to and knew the Buddha, the Blessed One, endowed with great merit, having obtained robes and, food and, bedding and, cushions and, medicine and, medical supplies, together with the Sangha of Shravakas, dwelling in the Kalanda Bamboo Grove, a grove of light in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir). When the Blessed One attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, the two venerable ones, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, made this vow: "Until a single sentient being from among the hell beings, animals, and pretas is liberated, we vow not to eat." Then, those two venerable ones, from time to time, sometimes wandered and went in the hell realms, sometimes wandered and went among the animals, sometimes wandered and went among the pretas, and there those two heard the evil sounds of sentient beings being threatened by various harms, and thus wandered...

Again returning, he declares to the four assemblies. Having heard that, they also become disgusted. Then, those two point it out to him and teach the Dharma that is in accordance with him, so that many sentient beings, having heard, will attain distinction and become a place for hearing the Dharma and speaking. Later, at one time, the venerable great Maudgalyayana went wandering in the realm of the pretas. He saw a preta whose stomach was as big as a mountain and whose mouth was as small as the eye of a needle, covered with his own hair, blazing, intensely blazing, completely blazing, the flames blazing as one, burning and uttering a distressed sound, experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, and seeing where there was excrement and urine, wandering there, but even that was not easily found. Then, that venerable one asked that preta: Hey, what deed have you done that you are experiencing such intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings? The preta said: When the sun rises, there is no need for a lamp. Please report this matter to the Bhagavan, and he will prophesy to you the nature of my deeds. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana went to where the Bhagavan was. At that time, the Bhagavan, having arisen from meditative absorption, was teaching the four assemblies all that had the taste of Dharma, like honey that bees have not yet extracted. Hundreds of thousands of retinues were also listening to all that had the taste of Dharma from the Bhagavan without moving their senses. Then, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, speak frankly, speak pleasantly, say "Come, welcome," and always smile first. There, the Bhagavan said to the venerable great Maudgalyayana: Maudgalyayana, come! Welcome to you! Where have you come from just now? Maudgalyayana replied: Venerable one, I have come back from wandering in the realm of the pretas. There, I saw a preta whose stomach was as big as a mountain and whose mouth was as small as the eye of a needle, covered with his own hair, smelling extremely foul like feces, extremely ugly, seeking feces as food, and even that was not easily found.
