In that life, I saw a rain of torches with sparks of fire falling upon her. The Blessed One said, "Son of Maudgalyāyana, that preta is doing evil. Do you want to hear about her karma?" The monks said, "We desire to hear." Son of Maudgalyāyana said, "Then listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you." Son of Maudgalyāyana, in the past, in the past time, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings reached twenty thousand years, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed One, the Tamer of Beings, the Unequaled One, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. When he was dwelling and residing in the Deer Park spoken of by the sages in the city of Vārāṇasī, a monk was walking on the road, and he was afflicted by thirst. He went to a well, where there was a girl filling a pot with water. That monk said to her, "Sister, I am afflicted by thirst, please give me water." That one who always clung to possessions, arose with miserliness, and said to that monk, "Monk, my pot will be depleted. Even if you die, I will not give you water." Then, that monk, afflicted by thirst, went away in despair. Then, that girl always relied on and cultivated miserliness, and increased it. Having died in that way, she was born as a preta, experiencing such intense, unbearable, burning, and unpleasant feelings. Son of Maudgalyāyana, therefore, one should train in this way: in order to abandon miserliness, one should strive. Son of Maudgalyāyana, you should train in that way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the venerable great son of Maudgalyāyana, as well as gods, non-gods, garudas, kinnaras, great serpent-bellies, and other beings, rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The hundred stories telling of Gangpo and others, the eleventh fascicle, called "The Vessel of External Realms," is dedicated to the Buddha, the Blessed One, and to the kings and great ministers.

and the women, the rich, the people of the palace entourage, the merchants, the captains, the gods, the nagas, the yakshas, the asuras, the garudas, the kinnaras, and the mahoragas honored, respected, revered, and made offerings to him. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was honored and known by the gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit, and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies. He resided in Rajagriha, in the Bamboo Grove of Kalanda, in the Garden of Light, together with the community of shravakas. Then, the venerable Maha Moggallana, having dressed in his undergarments and robes in the early morning, took his bowl and went to Rajagriha for alms. Having collected alms in Rajagriha, he ate his meal, refrained from taking more food, put away his bowl and robes, and went to Gijjhakuta Mountain (Vulture Peak Mountain). Having arrived, he ascended Gijjhakuta Mountain and sat down near a tree for the sake of spending the day. Then, the venerable Maha Moggallana saw a female preta (hungry ghost) standing naked like a burning tree stump, covering herself with her own hair. Her stomach was as big as a mountain, and her mouth was as small as the eye of a needle. She was burning, intensely burning, completely burning, with flames blazing, uttering sounds of burning and suffering, experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings. She smelled foul like feces, extremely foul, and ate feces as food, which was also not easy to find. Having seen this, the venerable Maha Moggallana became displeased and asked the female preta: "What evil deeds did you commit in the past that you are experiencing such a result?" The female preta said: "Venerable Maha Moggallana, I am the one who commits evil deeds. Please report this matter to the Buddha, the Blessed One, and he will tell you about the nature of my karma. If others hear this, they will also abandon evil deeds." Then, the venerable

The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana's son went to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One arose from meditative absorption and taught the fourfold assembly all that was endowed with the taste of Dharma, like unboiled honey. Countless hundreds of thousands of retinues also listened to all that was endowed with the taste of Dharma from the Blessed One without moving their faculties. Then, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, speak frankly, speak pleasantly, saying, "Welcome, you have come, it is good," they always smile first. There, the Blessed One spoke thus to the venerable Maudgalyāyana's son: Maudgalyāyana's son, welcome! You have come well! Where have you come from now? Maudgalyāyana's son reported: Venerable one, I was wandering in the realm of the pretas, and there I saw a female preta, shaped like a burning tree stump, naked, covering herself with her own hair, her belly as big as a mountain, but her mouth as small as the eye of a needle, burning, intensely burning, very intensely burning, a single flame burning, being burned, uttering cries of agony, experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, and merely by being seen, she could cause rivers and wells to dry up. When rain falls, a rain of ashes with sparks flying falls upon her, and like feces, she emits a foul odor, an extremely foul odor, seeking feces as food, and even that is not easily found.
