He was entrusted to eight mothers: two mothers living in the cradle of searching, two mothers nursing, two mothers washing dirt, and two mothers playing. The eight mothers raised him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of butter, and all sorts of other excellent utensils, and he grew up like a lotus in the sea. When he grew up, he sought good teachings but could not find them. Then, after his father died, he was made king, and he admonished the ministers: 'Leaders of the country, I need good teachings, seek my good teachings!' Then, those ministers, in order to seek good teachings, even showed hundreds of millions of gold in the entire Jambudvipa, but they could not find good teachings. Then, they reported to the king. The king was distressed and disappointed because he longed to hear good teachings. The lord of the gods, Indra, has the wisdom to see the lower realms, and when he saw that the king was troubled by hearing good teachings, he thought, 'I should test the king.' Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, transformed into the appearance of a yaksha, with ugly limbs and eyes, and spoke a verse in front of the king: Good deeds should be practiced, evil deeds should not be done, in this world and the next, those who practice good deeds will rely on happiness. Then, the king was amazed and radiant, and said to the yaksha: 'Secret one, please recite that verse for me, please speak, please speak.' Then, the yaksha said to the king: 'If you do as I say, then afterwards I will also do as you command.' The king said, 'What do you command me?' The yaksha said, 'For seven days and seven nights, light a fire in a fire pit with sandalwood, and if you jump into it, then afterwards I will repeat that verse for you.' When the king heard this, he was very happy and said to the yaksha, 'So be it.' Then, the king placed the yaksha under oath.

Then he ordered that it be proclaimed in all places: 'From today, in seven days, in order to hear the king's good words, I will jump into the fire pit. Those of you who wish to see a miracle, come here.' Then, in order to understand the bodhisattva's pure superior thought, and in order to see the miracle, hundreds of thousands of people gathered, and hundreds of thousands of gods gathered in the sky. Among them, the yaksha rose into the sky and said to the bodhisattva: 'Great king, please do as you have promised!' Then the king enthroned his eldest son as king, confessed his faults to the ministers, the people of the towns, and the people of the region. The crowds sighed, and the king went to the edge of the fire pit and spoke this verse: 'For the sake of the Dharma, I jump into the burning pyre pit, like a blood-red sun. I am determined to jump into the terrifying abyss, I have no fear for my life. May this fire pit, by the power of my merit, become a most excellent pond. May it be filled with cool water anointed with sandalwood paste and lotus flowers.' Having said this, the bodhisattva jumped into that fire pit. As soon as he jumped, that fire pit turned into a pond. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, having seen that wonderful miracle that caused gods and men to have faith, made the form of the yaksha disappear, and remaining in his own form, spoke this verse: 'Virtuous conduct, the Dharma, should be practiced. Evil conduct should not be done. In this world and the next, practicing the Dharma will rely on happiness.' Then, the bodhisattva kept that verse in mind, wrote it on a golden tablet, and circulated it throughout the towns, villages, regions, and royal palaces of Jambudvipa. The Blessed One said: 'Monks, what do you think? The one who became king at that time was me. At that time, I gave up my life in order to hear the good words, what need is there to mention it now? Monks, therefore, you should train like this: Respect the Dharma.'

Oh! One should regard as a guru, regard as a painting, and make offerings. Having shown respect to the Dharma, regarded as a guru, regarded as a painting, and made offerings, one should rely on it and abide. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. As for the one called Anāthapiṇḍada, the kings and great ministers, as well as the wealthy, the people of the palace retinue, the merchants and captains, the gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, all showed respect to the Buddha Bhagavan, regarded him as a guru, regarded him as a painting, and made offerings. The gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, having made offerings and knowing the Buddha Bhagavan, endowed with great merit, having obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicines, and medical supplies, together with the monastic community of śrāvakas, were dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the pleasure garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. Then, the Blessed One, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes in the morning, took his bowl and went to Śrāvastī for alms. Then, after some time, gradually proceeding to a distant place, he entered the main road, and a brahmin also came to that main road. Then, he saw the Buddha Bhagavan, whose body was well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light exceeding a thousand suns, like a mountain of jewels, good in every way. Having seen him, he contemplated for a very long time, then drew a line on the ground and said to the Blessed One, "O Gautama, until you give me about five hundred kārshāpaṇas, please do not cross this line." Then, the Blessed One, in order to show that time should not be wasted, and in order to prevent taking what is not given, stood as if setting up a threshold. Then, Śrāvastī was nearby
