Having heard the words of the hermit, (the rabbit) became sad, thinking it was like being separated from its father. So it prostrated at the feet of that hermit and said: Please do not abandon me. In general, the home is full of various faults, while the solitary place is endowed with perfect qualities. Although the hermit did not answer many times, (the rabbit) did not let him leave. Then, the rabbit said: If you really cannot stay, please stay here just for today, and tomorrow go wherever you please. Then, that hermit thought: These beings born in the animal realm, because they are attached to suffering and so on, so, this (rabbit) must want to borrow some food from me today. Thinking this, he agreed to it. Then, after the day's work was done, when evening came, the rabbit came to the hermit, circled around him, and asked for forgiveness: Great hermit, because I was born in the animal realm, I do not know what to do and what not to do, please forgive me for any slight offense I have committed against you. After saying this, it jumped into the fire without hesitation. Then, that hermit became unhappy, and crying, took (the rabbit) out of the fire, held it in his arms like his only beloved child, and asked: What do you want to do, child? The rabbit said: Great hermit, because you like the solitary place, please eat my flesh and sustain your life for one day. In general, for a rabbit that grows up in forest caves, are there not bean pods, sesame seeds, and rice? Please burn my body to overcome the difficulties, eat my flesh, and stay in the hermitage today. Then, that hermit, having heard the words of the rabbit, became unhappy and said: If that is the case, because you love (me) and love the solitary place, even if I give up my life here, it is easy, but I will not go to the (secular) village. Then, the rabbit, having heard those words, felt happy in its heart, looked up to the sky and prayed: Even if I go to the solitary place, if my heart also likes solitude, then by the power of that true and unfailing word, may a rain of great power fall! It also said this. As soon as it said this, by the power of the Bodhisattva, all the places of great power shook. The gods all saw what was happening below.

descended. Thinking, "What is happening?" it was seen as the power of the Bodhisattva. After a while, the lord of the gods, Indra, caused a great rain of power to fall on that dwelling place, and afterward, grass, reeds, medicines, flowers, and abundant fruits grew again. Then, that hermit, relying on the virtuous friend Rabbit, while dwelling there, directly realized the five supernormal cognitions. Then, that hermit said to the Rabbit: 'Hey, Rabbit, what do you think you will accomplish with this nature of asceticism, diligence, and compassion?' The Rabbit said: 'In order to guide the blind world that has no guide, to liberate beings who are not liberated, to give breath to those who have no breath, and to completely liberate those who have not completely passed beyond suffering, may I become a Buddha.' Then, that hermit, having heard those words, said to the Rabbit: 'When you become a Buddha, please remember me as well.' The Rabbit said: 'I will do so.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, what do you think? The one who became a rabbit at that time was me. The hermit was this son of a noble family. Monks, therefore, you should train like this: rely on virtuous friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports, and do not rely on evil friends, evil companions, and evil supports. Monks, you should train like this.' Then, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, when I am alone in a solitary place, entering into meditation, such a mental proliferation arises in my mind, namely, that virtuous friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are half of the ব্রহ্মচर्या brahmacarya, brahmacharya, pure conduct, 梵行, while evil friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not so.'

Half is like that. Do not say that evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Why is that? Ananda, for example, good spiritual friends, good companions, and good supports are the entirety of pure conduct, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, and completely purified, while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Why is that? Ananda, by relying on good spiritual friends, sentient beings who are subject to birth will be completely liberated from the law of birth; sentient beings who are subject to aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil will be completely liberated from the law of aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil. Ananda, therefore, you should understand in this way by this analogy alone, that good spiritual friends, good companions, and good supports are the entirety of pure conduct, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, and completely purified, while evil spiritual friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Ananda, you should train in this way. After the Blessed One spoke thus, those monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. "Seeking the Dharma": The Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored, respected, revered, and offered to by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who is worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas.
