If he is prevented from staying in the city and instead made to enter the monastery, he does not like it. Then, the Blessed One prevented him from associating with householders three times. Son, associating with householders has many faults. The forms that can be known by the eye are lovely, pleasing, delightful, agreeable, satisfying, causing attachment, and like thorns. The sounds that can be known by the ear, the smells that can be known by the nose, the tastes that can be known by the tongue, and the touches that can be known by the body are lovely, pleasing, delightful, agreeable, satisfying, causing attachment, and like thorns. Wherever one dwells, the virtues of the monastery, which increase virtuous dharmas, are also praised in many ways. Then, after some time, that son of good family, relying on the virtuous friend, the Blessed One, was always diligent, practicing, and striving to dwell in the monastery. He realized that this wheel of samsara with five eyes is moving and unstable. He thoroughly understood that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, decline, dissolution, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from desire in the three realms, was equal to gold and dung, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, became cool like sandalwood soaked in water, shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual self-awareness, did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and respect, and became an object of worship, remembrance, and reverence by the gods and their retinues. Then, he remembered his past lives and also saw the Blessed One practicing extremely difficult austerities. Then he went to the Blessed One, praised him with reverence, and made prostrations. Then, the monks had doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable One, the Blessed One has prevented this son of good family from entering the city three times, and instead made him stay in the monastery.

Look at the placement from the time of being placed until the state of being an Arhat. The Blessed One said: Monks, now the Thus-Gone One is free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil, is all-knowing, and has attained mastery over all-knowing wisdom and all that is to be known. What is so amazing about this son of good family being turned away from the village three times and placed in a solitary place until he becomes an Arhat? In the past, when he was still with desire, hatred, and delusion, and had not been completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil, I gave up my own life to turn this son of good family away from the village and place him in a solitary place. Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in a valley where streams flowed, and flowers, fruits, and stones were abundant, there lived a hermit who practiced intense asceticism, living on fruits, roots, and water, wearing deerskin and bark, and performing fire sacrifices. That hermit also had a friend, a rabbit who understood human speech. That rabbit went to the hermit three times a day. Having gone there, he spoke respectfully, made him very happy with various kinds of talk, and the two of them became very close, living together like father and son. Later, there was a great drought, which caused the rivers and wells to have little water, and the trees also became without flowers and fruits. Then, that hermit was unhappy because there was no food in that place, so he took off the deerskin and bark. Then, that rabbit saw him become like that and asked: Great hermit, where are you going? The hermit said: Now I am going to the village, where I will live on cooked food.
