The earth spoke to the monks: Monks, in whatever house the parents are well-treated, well-offered to, and well-served, that house possesses Brahma. Why is that? Monks, because the parents of a noble son are, in terms of reason, like Brahma. Monks, in whatever house the parents are well-treated, well- offered to, and well-served, that house possesses a teacher. Why is that? Because the parents of a noble son are, in terms of reason, like a teacher. Monks, in whatever house the parents are well-treated, well-offered to, and well-served, that house possesses the worthiness of universal giving. Why is that? Monks, because the parents of a noble son are, in terms of reason, worthy of universal giving. Monks, in whatever house the parents are well-treated, well-offered to, and well-served, that house possesses fire. Why is that? Monks, because the parents of a noble son are, in terms of reason, like fire. Monks, in whatever house the parents are well-treated, well-offered to, and well-served, that house possesses gods. Why is that? Monks, because the parents of a noble son are, in terms of reason, like gods. The Blessed One spoke thus. Having spoken thus, the Sugata, the Teacher, also spoke thus: Parents are Brahma, Likewise, they are the first teacher. They are the worthy recipients of the son's universal giving, They are both humans and gods. Therefore, those two are the objects of reverence, With ointments and baths, And also washing their feet, Or with food and drink, Clothes, bedding, and cushions, The wise should honor them. Having honored the parents, Therefore, those wise ones, Will not be blamed here, And even after death, they will rejoice in heaven. When the Blessed One

When the Buddha of the past was teaching this sutra, the monks became doubtful. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One, the Buddha. "Venerable Blessed One, it is wonderful that you praise the merit of serving parents!" The Blessed One said: "Monks, now the Tathagata is free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, and free from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and turmoil. He is completely liberated, all-knowing, all-powerful, and has mastered all wisdom and knowledge. What is so surprising about praising the merit of serving parents? In the past, when I was still full of desire, full of hatred, full of delusion, and had not been liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and turmoil, even a small harm done to my mother would cause me great suffering; even a small act of respect would cause me great joy. Listen carefully and remember well, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a shipmaster named 'Dear Friend,' who was rich and possessed great wealth and enjoyment, owning vast lands and extensive property, possessing wealth comparable to that of Vaiśravaṇa, even rivaling Vaiśravaṇa's wealth. He took a wife from the same caste, and together they played, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves. They played, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves, but the children they bore all died. He held his knees with his hands, feeling depressed, thinking: 'Although my house is full of wealth, I have neither son nor daughter. After I die, because there is no son, all my property will be confiscated by the king.' Then some people advised him: 'If your son is born, give him a girl's name, and in that way he will live long.' Because he had no son and desired a son, he prayed to Gulang, the water god, Kubera, and Berg-

Prayers are also offered to Indra, Brahma, and other distinguished deities, such as: prayers to the deities of gardens, the deities of forests, the deities of crossroads, the deities of junctions, the deities who receive torma offerings, the co-born deities, those who are in accordance with the Dharma, and the deities who always follow behind. In the world, there is a saying that sons and daughters are born through prayer, but this is not the case. If sons and daughters were indeed born through prayer, then like a Chakravartin king, each person would have a thousand sons. In reality, sons and daughters are born from the convergence of three conditions: the parents' desire arising and uniting, the mother being in season and having menstruation, and the arrival of a Gandharva. It is from the convergence of these three conditions that sons and daughters are born. Then, she remains focused on praying, and a being dies and transmigrates from a certain class of beings, entering the womb of his wife. Some wise women possess five unique qualities. What are these five qualities? They know whether a man is conceived or not conceived; they know the time and also know menstruation; they know whether a child is conceived and also know from where the child is conceived; they know whether it is a boy or a girl. If it is a boy, the fetus dwells and abides on the right side of the abdomen; if it is a girl, the fetus dwells and abides on the left side of the abdomen. She is overjoyed and tells her family: 'Master, I am pregnant! Because the fetus dwells and abides on the right side of my womb, it is certain to be a boy, please rejoice!' He is also overjoyed, raising his upper body and extending his right hand, saying: 'I will finally see the face of the son I have longed for for so long! May my son be worthy, may he not be unworthy! When he grows up, may he do my work! May he nurture me in return for being nurtured! May he enjoy my wealth! May my lineage endure for a long time! After we pass away and die, may he perform acts of generosity for us, whether many or few!'
