He went there and studied letters together with the children. Later, once, when the king was in the season of spring, in the forest where the trees were full of flowers, and swans, cranes, peacocks, parrots, partridges, cuckoos, and shangshang birds were making sounds, accompanied by the virtuous queen and the queen's attendants, he went to the garden. In that garden, the king was playing together with the queen's attendants, but the queen Evil-Wisdom was agitated, overcome by jealousy and anger. The king offered her half of the drink he had consumed, and she, agitated, sent a message to the king, saying, "If I were to drink half of what you have drunk, may I drink the blood of my son!" In indulging desire, there is no sinful deed that is not done. Then, although the king was endowed with the Dharma by Brahma, he was entangled by the attachment of desire, and even though the queen's attendants dissuaded him, the fire of anger blazed. She grew increasingly angry and commanded, "Today, cut off the neck of the boy Dharma Protector and feed him the blood!" Then, the boy Dharma Protector, dwelling in the children's monastery, heard this and wept, saying, "In samsara, the disharmony of sentient beings is truly terrible; like this, under the sway of anger, they even kill the son born from their own body!" Then, the boy Dharma Protector adorned himself with all ornaments, prostrated at his father's feet, and reported, "Father, I report to the father, the pitiable son, even if I have not committed any wrong, why do you not allow me not to be killed?" The king said, "Pitiable son, if your mother can forgive, then I too shall forgive." Then, Dharma Protector went weeping to his mother, prostrated at her feet, and with palms joined, said, "Mother, please forgive, do not allow me to be killed!" Even though she heard such pitiable, pitiable sounds, and miserable, miserable sounds, even hearing the indistinct words, she did not forgive. Then, the executioners, with sharp weapons, severed the neck of the boy Dharma Protector, and fed the blood to the queen Evil-Wisdom, but even then, the queen Evil-Wisdom had no regret. The boy Dharma Protector generated joy in his mind towards his parents and the executioners.

died from you. The Blessed One spoke thus: "Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who was called the boy Dharma Protector was none other than myself. That evil-minded queen was none other than Devadatta. Even when I fell into the hands of the executioner at that time, I still generated a mind of loving-kindness towards her. Even now, though she strives to kill me, I still think of her with loving-kindness, thinking of benefiting her, thinking of compassion. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves thus: cultivate a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. Monks, you should train yourselves thus." After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The Peaceful One, namely the Buddha, the Blessed One, was revered and honored by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace retinue, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, who made offerings, regarded him as their teacher, drew his image, and made offerings. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit, and easily obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies. Accompanied by the Sangha of Hearers, he resided in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, the monks were divided into two groups, one group vowing to dwell in retreat during the middle of the summer month, and the other group vowing to dwell in retreat until the end of the autumn month. There, the monks were either dyeing their alms bowls, or washing and sewing their robes. Thereafter, for a time, a certain monk wished to sew his robe, but being unable to thread the needle, he cried out in sorrow, moaned in pain, and muttered to himself, saying: "Who in the world desires merit?"

It is said, who in the world desires merit? The Blessed One was also walking and staying not far from there. Then, the Blessed One extended his hand like an elephant's trunk, and with a voice that was deep, melodious, and perfect, pleasing like the call of a Kalaviṅka bird, and as pleasant as the sound of a great drum, He said: Bhikṣu, I am the one in the world who desires merit. Then, that bhikṣu, having heard the Blessed One's voice endowed with five qualities, bowed respectfully, hastily took the Blessed One's hand, placed it on his head, and said: Blessed One, this hand of yours has accumulated generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom for three countless eons, yet still the Blessed One says, Bhikṣu, I am the one in the world who desires merit? The Blessed One said: Bhikṣu, I am not satisfied with merit, Bhikṣu, because I have tasted the flavor of merit, therefore I am not satisfied with merit. Then, the bhikṣus became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha Blessed One: Blessed One, it is wonderful that you are not satisfied with the performance of merit! The Blessed One said: Bhikṣus, what is so wonderful about the Tathāgata now being free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil, being omniscient, being the all-knowing one with all aspects, having already attained mastery over wisdom and all that is to be known? In the past, when I was full of desire, full of hatred, full of delusion, and not completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil, I was not satisfied with the performance of merit, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Bhikṣus, in the past, in a past age, in the peaceful royal palace,
