Having been respected, made as a lama, drawn, and offered, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, and who possesses great merit, having obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies, together with the monastic community of shravakas, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, in the pleasure garden of Anathapindika in Shravasti. Then, the Bhagavan addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, if sentient beings also knew the result of giving, just as I know the result of giving and also know the complete maturation of the result of the distribution of giving, then even from the last mouthful of food and whatever remains, if they were to find a worthy recipient, they would not fail to give to them, nor would they eat before distributing it. And their minds would not be completely bound by the arising of miserliness. Just as I know the result of giving and also know the complete maturation of the result of the distribution of giving, sentient beings do not know the result of giving, nor do they know the complete maturation of the result of the distribution of giving. Therefore, with minds of attachment, they eat without giving or distributing, and their minds are completely bound by the arising of miserliness." The Bhagavan spoke thus, and after the Sugata had spoken thus, the Teacher further declared: "The maturation of distribution, how it becomes meaningful, as spoken by the great sage, if sentient beings knew, they would not eat before giving, nor would they become miserly, and their minds of attachment would never arise. Because children obscured by ignorance do not know, therefore always with minds of attachment, they always eat without giving. Having arisen with miserliness, their minds are completely bound. Whose

At that time, when the Blessed One was teaching this sutra, the monks became doubtful. In order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed Buddha: Venerable Blessed One, you have praised generosity and also taught about the ripening of the fruits of generosity. It is truly wonderful! The Blessed One said: Monks, what is so surprising that the Tathagata has praised generosity and also taught about the ripening of the fruits of generosity? In the past, even the food that I was about to eat for begging, I gave it all away. Listen carefully and remember it well, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta who ruled. During his reign, the country was prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, and had good harvests. The people were numerous and full of life. Disputes were pacified, and there were no wars, internal strife, thieves, famines, or diseases. It was abundant in rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. He ruled the country harmlessly, like caring for an only child, without causing any trouble. That king was also faithful, virtuous, and had good intentions. He was engaged in benefiting himself and others, had great compassion, was broad-minded, desired the Dharma, loved the people, gave away everything completely, gave away everything without attachment, and abided in great generosity. Later, a great famine occurred, comparable to the famine at the end of an eon. Then, the people, fearing death from the famine, were hungry, their cheeks were sunken, they looked like hungry ghosts, and they gathered together, crowding before the king, shouting: Long live the king! May you live long! They praised and said: O God, please save us from this fear of famine and grant us life! Then, the king summoned the treasurer and asked: Hey, treasurer, is there enough food and drink in the treasury to suffice for us and these people? Hearing this, the treasurer said

Then they divined and prayed to the gods. After that, the skilled diviners divined and said, 'During this period, all those residing in the city will eat one portion of food each day, while the king will eat two portions.' They reported this. After that, the king summoned the people and announced, 'Then, you should come to the royal palace every day, eat one portion of food each, and then leave.' And so it was done. After that, those people came to the palace every day, each person ate one portion of food, and then they happily went their own ways. After that, another Brahmin, not being immersed in divination, but having heard the news from others, said to the king, 'O god, I have heard that you are performing divination among the people, please grant me also that one portion of food.' After that, the king gave one of the two portions of food he was going to eat to the Brahmin, and he himself ate only one portion, the same as the people of the city. The god Indra, lord of the gods, gained awareness of the lower realm, and he thought to himself, 'Alas, in the city of Varanasi, being a king is very difficult, I should test him.' After that, the god Indra, lord of the gods, transformed himself into the guise of a Brahmin, and when he arrived at the palace, he praised the king, saying, 'May you be victorious, may you have a long life!' Then he said, 'O god, I am hungry, I beseech you to help me with your one portion of food.' After that, the king, resolved to give up his own life, with compassion, gave his one portion of food to the Brahmin, and he himself began to fast. In this way, he abstained from food for six days. However, when he saw that most of the people were eating food, he felt very happy. After that, the god Indra, lord of the gods, seeing that the king was acting so diligently, disappeared the guise of the Brahmin, and staying in his own form, praised the king, 'Great king, well done! I am very pleased that you have undertaken such hardship. Because there is one like you protecting the people, these people have a protector. Now, proclaim throughout the land to collect all the seeds, and in seven days, I will make all the grains flourish.'
