It was said that such a great rain of power should be brought down. The king also allowed it to be done in the same way. Indra also brought down such a great rain of power, and therefore that famine was averted and it became a year of good harvest. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? Who was the king named Brahma-given at that time and in that era? It was I. Even if such a famine occurred, I gave up my life and made such offerings. Monks, therefore, you should learn in this way, give alms, do meritorious deeds, monks, you should learn in that way. After the Blessed One said that, those monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. The 'Dharma Protector' is said to be: The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, were revered by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers. They were revered, made gurus, painted, and offered to. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, who were offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, possessed great merit, and obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, sickness remedies, and medicines. Together with the Sangha of Hearers, they resided and dwelt in the Bamboo Grove, the Garden of Light, in Rajagriha. When the foolish man Devadatta, in order to kill the Blessed One, released the elephant Nalagiri, scattered poisonous powder, and sent executioners, he had long been an executioner, enemy, and unfriendly to the Blessed One. But the Blessed One had thoughts of loving-kindness, thoughts of benefit, and thoughts of compassion towards him, and at that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One: Blessed One, in this way, Devadatta is striving to kill the Blessed One.

In his mind. The Blessed One observed that the Tathagata was closely abiding here with thoughts of loving-kindness, thoughts of benefit, and thoughts of compassion. The Blessed One said: Monks, what is so amazing about the fact that the Thus-Gone One, now free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil, is all-knowing, all-seeing, and has mastered all wisdom and knowledge? Even when I was full of desire, hatred, and delusion in the past, and was about to be killed in my youth, I did not harbor hatred in my mind. Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta who ruled. During his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, peace, good harvests, and the city was filled with many people. There was no fighting, quarrels were pacified, and there were no riots, internal strife, thieves, famine, or diseases. There were abundant rice crops, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. He ruled the kingdom harmlessly, like caring for an only child, without causing trouble. That king was also full of faith, virtuous, and kind-hearted, engaged in benefiting himself and others, greatly compassionate, magnanimous, desiring the Dharma, loving beings, giving everything away, completely giving everything away, giving without attachment, and abiding in great generosity. That king had a queen named Durbuddhi, who was fierce, angry, and cunning. Her only son, named Dharmapala, was also born from this Durbuddhi. The young Dharmapala was also full of faith, virtuous, and kind-hearted, engaged in benefiting himself and others, greatly compassionate, magnanimous, desiring the Dharma, and loving beings. When the Brahmins and householders living in Varanasi saw him, they found him lovely, pitiable, very dear, and pleasing. Then, that...
