The abode of sea monsters in the ocean, even the tides may cease; But for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha's time never passes. Then, the Blessed One, in order to benefit the beings to be tamed, generated a worldly thought: Alas! If the son of the Gandharva, Five Crests, surrounded by seven thousand Gandharvas, holding a lute made of lapis lazuli, were to come to me, how excellent! Thus he thought. As soon as he generated this thought, the son of the Gandharva, Five Crests, surrounded by seven thousand Gandharvas, properly made offerings to the Blessed One and offered the Blessed One a lute made of lapis lazuli. Then, the king of musicians, named Great Joy, took the lute before the Blessed One and showed that even from one string, seven kinds of sounds and twenty-one kinds of abdominal sounds could be produced. Hearing this, King Clear and many other ordinary people were greatly amazed. Then, the Blessed One also plucked the lute made of lapis lazuli and showed that even from one string, many kinds of sound differences and many kinds of abdominal sounds could be produced. These also proclaimed the aspect of emptiness and the aspect of selflessness. This body was also shown to be like a lute. The sounds were shown to be like the senses. The abdominal sounds were shown to be like the nature of the mind. Hearing this, the king of musicians, Great Joy, developed faith and offered the lute to the incense chamber. He then renounced before the Blessed One and, through diligence, practice, and effort, realized that this cycle of the five defilements was shaking and unstable. He determined that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, fall, disintegration, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat, becoming an Arhat free from desire in the three realms. He possessed a mind that equated gold and dung, and that saw no difference between the sky and the palm of his hand. Like sandalwood soaked, he possessed a hundred statements of realization, such as fullness. Having become cool, he shattered the eggshell with wisdom. He obtained wisdom and clairvoyance, and individual perfect knowledge of existence.

Turning their backs on gain, attachment, and reverence, they became a place of offering, remembrance, and respect for the gods with their faculties and retinues. Then, the gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas became faithful and began to protect, rescue, and conceal the Blessed One's teachings. The five hundred musicians also became joyful and content, thinking, "We are engaged in evil deeds and live in hardship. We should inform the king and without fail invite the Blessed One and his monastic community of hearers to enter the city." After a while, those musicians obtained permission and invited the Blessed One and his monastic community of hearers to enter the city. The Blessed One also did not say anything to those musicians, thus granting permission. Then, those musicians, the king, ministers, palace attendants, and local people together cleared all the stones, gravel, and pebbles from the city of Shravasti, sprinkled it with scented water, scattered various flowers, burned various incenses, and decorated it with flower garlands. Those musicians also each took their lutes and made offerings with the sounds of pottery drums, flutes, round drums, and various musical instruments. They also satisfied the Blessed One and his monastic community of hearers with delicious food. Then, the Blessed One smiled. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, when they smile. At that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light emanated from his mouth, some going downwards and some going upwards. Those that went downwards reached the hells of sentient beings, namely, the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Howling Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blistering Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Atata Hell, the Hahava Hell, the Achuchu Hell, the Utpala-like Cracking Hell, and the Padma-like Cracking

, and became a large crack like a lotus. In those hot sentient being hells, it became cool and descended. In those cold sentient being hells, it became warm and descended. Thus, the differences in suffering of those sentient beings were all pacified. Then, they thought to themselves: 'Alas, have we died and transmigrated from here, or have we been reborn elsewhere?' Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Bhagavan manifested emanations. Seeing the emanations, they thought to themselves: 'Alas, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been reborn elsewhere. However, by the power of this unprecedented sentient being appearance, the differences in our suffering have been pacified.' Then, they developed great joy in the emanations, thereby exhausting the karma that would cause them to experience sentient being hell, and they will take rebirth among gods and humans, in those places that are fit to be vessels of truth. Those who go upwards are the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Strife-free, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma retinue, the Brahma attendants, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Universal Virtue, the Cloudless, the Merit-born, the Great Fruit, the Non-great, the Non-tormenting, the Manifest, the Utterly Visible, up to the gods of Akanistha, and proclaim the sound of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Two verses are also spoken: 'Strive for renunciation! Devote yourselves to the Buddha's teachings! Like an elephant destroying a house of reeds, destroy the army of the Lord of Death! Whoever in this Dharma and Discipline, acts with diligence, he will completely abandon the cycle of rebirth, and will be able to extinguish suffering.' Thus it is proclaimed. Then, those rays of light illuminate the three thousand great thousand worlds.
