He dwelt, abiding in the Bamboo Grove at the Squirrels' Feeding Place. When the foolish Devadatta had done thousands of harms to the Blessed One's teaching, yet could not even move a hair of the Blessed One, he said to King Ajātasattu: "Great King, let no one from Rājagaha go to the ascetic Gotama, nor give food. Even if that is done, he will not gain profit or reverence, he will not be eaten by demons, and will move to another place." Then the king did likewise. Then the lay followers who dwelt there, seeing the truth, wept, saying: "Alas! The arising of the Buddha, the Blessed One, is as rare as the udumbara flower, and even if we meet him, we cannot attend to him, and the people of the city of Rājagaha have become without a protector." The monks heard those words. Then the venerable Ānanda, as he had heard, informed the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: "Ānanda, in this the Tathāgata knows the time, do not be disheartened. Moreover, as long as my teaching exists, the requisites of the hearers will not be lacking, what need is there to say now?" At that time, the lord of the gods, Indra, had the vision of knowing the lower realms, and seeing that the Blessed One's teaching had become like that, in the moment of seeing, in order to generate the joy of the patrons and the givers, and to truly show the greatness of the Buddha's arising, and to cut off the arrogance and pride of Ajātasattu and Devadatta, and to show his own faith, he illuminated the entire city of Rājagaha with great light, and uttered a great voice, saying: "From this day forward, I will attend to the Blessed One and the community of hearers with divine garments, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medicinal supplies." Having said this, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One:

I, for as long as I live, in this city of Rajagriha (王舍城), wish to attend to the Blessed One and the Sangha of disciples with divine garments, food, bedding, seats, medicines for the sick, and medical supplies. May the Blessed One grant this to me. The Blessed One said: Kauśika (憍尸迦, Indra)! It is enough that many in the world who desire merit have thus placed their faith in me. Indra then said: Then, for the sake of the Tathagata, I wish to hold a festival every five years for five years. May the Blessed One grant this to me. The Blessed One said: Kauśika (憍尸迦, Indra)! It is enough that many in the world who desire merit have thus placed their faith in me. Indra then said: Then, may the Blessed One grant me to hold a festival for five years. Then, the Blessed One, in order to manifest the power of his own merit, to benefit Indra, the lord of the gods, and to ensure that the festival every five years would never cease in the future, granted it by remaining silent. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, knowing that the Blessed One had granted it by remaining silent, transformed the radiant grove into a palace resembling the Victorious Banner, and displayed the divine seats, the divine ponds, and the divine ambrosial food. Then, the Blessed One sat down on the prepared seat. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, knowing that the Buddha and the Sangha of monks were dwelling in comfort, attended to them with hundreds of thousands of gods, satisfying them with his own hands and offering them whatever they desired. Having satisfied them with his own hands in various ways and offered them whatever they desired, when the Blessed One had finished his meal and knew that the bowl had been taken away and his hands had been washed, he took a very low seat and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One instructed Indra, the lord of the gods, and his retinue with a Dharma talk, causing them to truly understand, truly uphold, truly praise, and truly rejoice.

While I was in the mango grove, I also saw the Blessed One being offered such offerings. After seeing this, I felt regret and gained great faith. The people of the royal palace in Rajagriha also gained the power of the Dharma and went to the king, saying, 'Alas, great king, even those who enjoy heavenly bliss and have no consorts have abandoned the heavenly realms and are making offerings to the Blessed One. Won't the people of the royal palace in Rajagriha fall behind in making offerings? This heavenly law should be abolished!' Then, King Ajatashatru abolished that law and proclaimed in the city of the royal palace, 'Make offerings to the Blessed One as you please!' After that, the people of the royal palace in Rajagriha and their families were happy, satisfied, and very delighted. They felt joy and happiness, and carrying flowers, incense, and garlands, they went to see the Blessed One. Then, the gods and humans made great offerings to the Blessed One. The Blessed One also taught the Dharma to the gods and humans, which would enable them to realize the Four Noble Truths. After hearing this, many gods and humans realized the truth. Then, the monks saw the Blessed One being offered and became doubtful. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, 'Venerable Blessed One, it is wonderful that such a celebration is held in the teachings of the Blessed One!' The Blessed One said, 'Monks, the Tathagata himself has accumulated merit and possessed the necessary conditions in other past lives. Like breaking through a dam, he has done and accumulated deeds that will surely happen and will not fail. Who else can experience the deeds that I have done and accumulated? Monks, the deeds that have been done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realms of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds that have been done and accumulated will ripen in the aggregates and realms of grasping.'
