One who has earth. Coarse. It arises from the cause of the four great elements. In this, the noble Hearer should abide by continuously observing its arising and ceasing. One should abide by observing detachment from desire, by observing cessation, and by observing abandonment. When the noble Hearer abides by continuously observing its arising and ceasing, then his desire for the body, his love for the body, his miserliness for the body, his abiding in the body, his attachment to the body, and his excessive attachment to the body, whatever these are, his mind will not be subdued and abide by them. Sons with the nature of fire, there are three kinds of feelings: What are the three? Pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither painful nor pleasant feeling. The noble Hearer who possesses learning, when he experiences pleasant feeling, his painful feeling and neither painful nor pleasant feeling, these two feelings will cease. At that time, the noble Hearer only experiences pleasant feeling, and that pleasant feeling is also impermanent and has the nature of cessation. The noble Hearer, when he experiences painful feeling, his pleasant feeling and neither painful nor pleasant feeling, these two feelings will cease. At that time, the noble Hearer only experiences painful feeling, and that painful feeling is also impermanent and has the nature of cessation. The noble Hearer, when he experiences neither painful nor pleasant feeling, his pleasant feeling and painful feeling, these two feelings will cease. At that time, the noble Hearer only experiences neither painful nor pleasant feeling, and that neither painful nor pleasant feeling is also impermanent and has the nature of cessation. He thinks thus: What is the basis of these feelings? What is the arising? What is the kind? What is the production? The basis of these feelings is contact. The arising is contact. The kind is contact. The production is contact. When this and this contact arise, this and this feeling will arise, contact.

When those (referring to something) cease, those feelings also cease, become peaceful, become cool, and vanish. Thinking thus, when he experiences some feeling of pleasure, pain, or neither-pain-nor-pleasure, he fully and truly knows the arising, ceasing, decay, fault, and liberation of those feelings. Because he fully and truly knows the arising, ceasing, decay, fault, and liberation of those feelings, he dwells contemplating all feelings as impermanent, destructive, ceasing, and abandoning. When he experiences a feeling simultaneous with the body, he fully and truly knows that he is experiencing a feeling simultaneous with the body. When he experiences a feeling simultaneous with life, he fully and truly knows that he is experiencing a feeling simultaneous with life. When life comes to an end, after the body separates, all his feelings will completely cease here, completely disappear, completely be exhausted and terminated. He thinks thus: When the body separates, even if a feeling of pleasure is experienced, that is only the end of suffering. When the body separates, even if a feeling of pain or neither-pain-nor-pleasure is experienced, that is only the end of suffering. When he experiences a feeling of pleasure, he experiences the non-corresponding, not the corresponding. When he experiences a feeling of pain or neither-pain-nor-pleasure, he experiences the non-corresponding, not the corresponding. What is non-corresponding? Non-corresponding with desire, hatred, and ignorance. Non-corresponding with birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and disturbance, and with suffering, I say. At that time, the venerable Shariputra, having been fully ordained for half a month, stood at the edge of the Blessed One's robe, holding a fan and fanning the Blessed One. After that, the venerable Shariputra...

Thinking thus: "The Blessed One speaks only of the experience of those particular dharmas. He speaks only of detachment, only of cessation, only of abandonment. I also should abide by observing the abandonment of those particular dharmas. I should abide by observing detachment, observing cessation, observing abandonment." Thus he thought. Then, the venerable Shariputra, with regard to those particular dharmas, abided by observing impermanence, observing destruction, observing detachment, observing cessation, observing abandonment. Without clinging, his mind was liberated from the defilements. The wandering ascetic Senaringsa also developed the Dharma-eye, which is dustless and stainless, with regard to the dharmas. Then, the wandering ascetic Senaringsa saw the Dharma, heard the Dharma, understood the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended uncertainty, did not rely on others, was not led by others, and having obtained fearlessness in the teachings of the Teacher, he rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together, bowed down to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, if I am able to go forth in the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline, receive full ordination, and obtain the state of a bhikkhu, I also wish to practice the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacaryā, brahmacharya, 净行) in the presence of the Blessed One." Then, the wandering ascetic Senaringsa went forth in the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline, received full ordination, and obtained the state of a bhikkhu. Having gone forth in this way, the venerable one dwelt alone, secluded, diligent, and with a nature of renunciation. Dwelling alone, secluded, diligent, and with a nature of renunciation, for what purpose do sons of good families shave off their hair and beards, put on dyed robes, and go forth from home into homelessness, solely out of faith, to realize, attain, and experience the ultimate consummation of the unsurpassed brahmacarya (ব্রহ্মচर्या, brahmacharya, 净行) in this very life by their own direct knowledge? "Birth is exhausted, the brahm
