Also, the perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, named the Buddha Bhagavan Victorious, appeared in the world. After that, he resided in a certain royal palace and its surroundings. Then, the perfectly complete Buddha Victorious thought, at that time there were two close Bodhisattvas, namely the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni and Maitreya. Among them, Maitreya's own continuum had become completely mature, but the beings to be tamed had not yet become completely mature. Shakyamuni's own continuum had not yet become completely mature, but the beings to be tamed had already become completely mature. Then, in order to make the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni's continuum completely mature, the perfectly complete Buddha Victorious went to the top of the Snow Mountain, entered a precious rock cave, sat in the lotus position, and entered the fire element samadhi. At that time, the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni, for the sake of fruit and root, went to the top of the king of mountains, the Snow Mountain. As they went back and forth, the perfectly complete Buddha Victorious, whose body was adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified with the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, saw all the goodness like a walking jewel mountain. As soon as he saw him, he stood on one foot day and night for seven days, praised him with a single verse, and attained such a state of single-mindedness: Such an excellent man like you, other great practitioners, are not in the heavenly realm or on earth. There is absolutely none in this world, nor is there in the palace of Vaishravana. There is also none in the excellent places of the heavenly palace, nor is there in any direction. Even if one were to circle the entire earth covered with mountains and forests, how could there be? Thus he praised. Then, the perfectly complete Buddha Victorious, seeing that the Bodhisattva Shakyamuni's continuum had become completely mature, bestowed the word "Excellent!": Excellent, excellent, noble man! Noble Brahmin, today.

Thus, praising the Tathagata, with this power and diligence perfected, nine kalpas were subdued. Thus it was said. Thereafter, the Blessed One, attended by the great gods, resided in that cave, and a small god residing in that cave was unable to enter the cave. Then, he transformed into an ugly eye and glared at the Blessed One. Although he glared for a long time, he was unable to harm the Blessed One, and he gained faith, thinking, "This ascetic is very good, an accomplished practitioner of asceticism." Then, he manifested a vast body, prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, begged for forgiveness, and also offered food. The Blessed One said to the monks: "What do you think? At that time, the god who resided in that cave was this ugly one, and due to the ripening of that karma, he experienced immeasurable suffering in samsara, and even now, due to that cause, he has become ugly. Later, he generated a joyful mind, and because of this, his ugliness disappeared, he became good, and he went forth and directly realized Arhatship. Monks, thus, actions that are definitely black will definitely have a black ripening. Actions that are definitely white will definitely have a white ripening. Leading actions will also have a leading ripening. Monks, therefore, abandon actions that are definitely black and leading actions, and rely solely on actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way." After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. That which is called Ganga, kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and those who crawl on their bellies,

The great wealthy ones revered and served, took as their lama, painted pictures, made offerings, and the buddhas, blessed ones, endowed with great merit, who were worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-walkers, having obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal supplies, together with the monastic community of hearers, resided and dwelt in the Deer Park where the sage spoke in the city of Varanasi. At that time, in Varanasi, there lived a householder who was rich, wealthy, and had great possessions, whose possessions were vast and extensive, who possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and who rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana, and he took a wife from the same lineage. He played and rejoiced with her. Although he played and rejoiced, he had neither son nor daughter, so he clasped his hands together and thought: 'Although my house is full of wealth, I have neither son nor daughter, so after I die, because there is no son, all my possessions will be taken by the king.' He was filled with anxiety in his heart. Then ascetics, brahmins, diviners, friends, relatives, and other kinsmen urged him to pray to the gods. Then, because she desired a son, that woman prayed to the god Kumara, the water god, Kubera, Indra, Brahma, and so on, and to other special gods. For example, she prayed to the gods of the gardens, the gods of the forests, the gods of the crossroads, the gods of the three-way intersections, the gods who receive tormas, the co-born gods, the dharma friends, and the gods who always follow behind. In the world, there is a saying that sons and daughters are born through prayer, but that is not the case. If sons and daughters were born through prayer, then like a great Chakravartin king, each person would have a thousand sons. Truly, sons and daughters are born from the assembly of three conditions, the three
