Having thoroughly understood that it is like dew on the grass and that it has the nature of decay, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, regarded gold and clods of earth as equal, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of his hand, cool like sandalwood soaked in water, destroyed the shell of the egg with wisdom, attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, did not look to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and became a place of worship, reverence, and respectful praise by the gods with their retinues. His friends and companions, also becoming weary, renounced and went to where the venerable Sbeta was, and having arrived, they said to the venerable Sbeta: 'Venerable Sbeta, what in the world has the nature of decay? What in the world does not have the nature of decay?' The venerable ones said, 'Form has the nature of decay. Its cessation, Nirvana, does not have the nature of decay.' The venerable ones said, 'Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness have the nature of decay. Its cessation, Nirvana, does not have the nature of decay.' The venerable ones said, 'What do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent?' The venerable Sbeta replied, 'It is impermanent.' The venerable ones said, 'Whatever is impermanent, is it suffering or not suffering?' The venerable Sbeta replied, 'It is suffering.' The venerable ones said, 'Would a well-learned noble disciple regard as self that which is impermanent, suffering, and has the nature of change, thinking, "This is mine, I am this, this is my self"?' The venerable Sbeta replied, 'No, it is not.' The venerable ones said, 'What do you think? Are feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness permanent or impermanent?' The venerable Sbeta replied, 'It is impermanent.' The venerable ones said, 'Whatever is impermanent, is it suffering or not suffering?' The venerable Sbeta

That is suffering. Venerable ones, whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, would a noble disciple with learning regard that as 'This is mine,' 'This is I,' 'This is my self'? Venerable ones of Savatthi, that is not so. Venerable ones, therefore, whatever form there may be, whether past, future, or present; whether internal or external; whether gross or subtle; whether inferior or superior; whether far or near; all that should be regarded with right wisdom as it really is: 'This is not mine, this is not I, this is not my self.' Whatever feeling, perception, mental formations, or consciousness there may be, whether past, future, or present; whether internal or external; whether gross or subtle; whether inferior or superior; whether far or near; all that should be regarded with right wisdom as it really is: 'This is not mine, this is not I, this is not my self.' Venerable ones, a disciple with learning who sees thus becomes disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion, he is liberated. When liberated, there is the knowledge that he is liberated, and he understands: 'Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to any state of being.' When this discourse was being delivered, those companions developed the spotless, immaculate vision of the Dhamma regarding the Dhamma. Then the monks arose with doubt, and to cut off all doubt, they asked the Blessed One. 'Venerable Savatthi, what deeds did he do that caused his body to become so ugly, diseased, and foul-smelling? And what deeds did he do that caused his mind to become so sharp and clear, and that he could realize Arhatship after ordination?'

The Blessed One said: "Monks, merely concealing, in previous other generations, one accumulates resources and possesses the conditions, appearing like a flood. Because one has done and accumulated those inevitable actions, who else will experience those actions done and accumulated by merely concealing? Monks, the actions done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous actions done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The actions of sentient beings will not be exhausted even in hundreds of kalpas. When they are gathered and the time is ripe, they will ripen into fruit. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a merchant who was not friendly with another merchant. He offered many riches to the king and pleaded, 'The divine merchant has committed a fault. Please punish him with a penalty and thoroughly punish him.' Then the king granted it and had that merchant punished. Then that person brought the merchant to his house and whipped him. Then blood came out of his body, and he sprinkled a lot of highly poisonous powder on him, and that person made the merchant's body swell up like a black piece of meat. Then the merchant's friends heard about how he had been treated, and they gathered together and healed him from that illness with various kinds of medicine. Then he became weary, left his home, and became a renunciate. Then, without a teacher, he meditated on the thirty-seven wings of enlightenment and directly realized the enlightenment of a solitary buddha. Then he had a thought: 'That merchant has created great non-merit from my continuum. Otherwise, I would definitely go to him and make him feel regret.' Then he went before that merchant and appeared in the sky above, displaying various kinds of miracles. Ordinary people quickly develop faith through miracles. He, like a tree cut from its roots, with his feet
